There's new signage coming to the western half of Interstate 80 before the end of the year.

The new Variable Advisory Speed (VAS) signs are bright yellow and are changed when the upcoming stretch of roadway may need to be met with caution.

"The intent is to have them placed at a regular enough interval, that you, the driver, can get the best information we can provide," said Nebraska Department of Transportation Engineer, Doug Hoevet.

They're being tested Tuesday, showing the normal speed limit from the Wyoming state line to the off-ramp for Oshkosh, Exit 95. By Dec. 31, they will be installed from the western border to the Overton exit (248).

"Whether it's a visual thing or a road condition thing," said Hoevet, "our staff can go out there and determine the appropriate speed based on the road conditions."

These signs do not change the speed limit. Anyone on the roads is asked to take the information into account when traveling through the area when a new speed advisory is placed within the digital sign.

VAS signs can reduce fatal and injury crashes by up to 51%, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).
