HASTINGS, Neb. – Hastings firefighters received some unexpected support from the community while neutralizing a house fire in cold weather Thursday morning.

According to Hastings Fire and Rescue, the initial call came in at 6:56 a.m. for a structure fire at 1105 Jefferson Ave.

Crews began battling the fire in weather that felt like 20 degrees before the sun came up.

HFR called for mutual support from the Red Cross, but were told it would be close to an hour before they could respond.

Word then got out through social media about the firefighters' dilemma, and led to members of the community bringing hot coffee and drinks from several stores in town for the firefighters and first responders on the scene.

Those first responders are thanking the individuals who went out of their way to provide support to the responding firefighters.

"Initially we had a lady just walk down the street with a coffee pot and some paper cups," said HFR Assistant Chief Troy Vorderstrasse. "Then we got some donations, so it was a pretty good turnout and we appreciate the community support."

Vorderstrasse says firefighters were able to control and extinguish the fire shortly after 8 a.m.

Two men in the home were evacuated and taken to Mary Lanning Healthcare with non-life threatening injuries, according to Vorderstrasse.

Officials say the home is currently uninhabitable after it suffered damages to the roof and attic.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
