West Elementary fourth graders learn about native cultures
West Elementary fourth graders spent the week learning Native languages, traditions and crafts thanks to a visit from artist and educator Steve Tamayo.
By News Channel NebraskaSIDNEY – Fourth graders at West Elementary spent the week learning about Native cultures through a visit from Steve Tamayo, founder of the Bluebird Cultural Initiative.
Tamayo, a U.S. Army veteran who served with the 101st Airborne Division, spent more than 30 years studying and teaching the history, traditions and artwork of Plains tribes. Through his nonprofit, he works with schools and organizations to help students understand Native languages, beliefs, jewelry and games.
During his time at West Elementary, Tamayo guided students in making traditional shell earrings and necklaces, shared his language and cultural traditions and presented several one-of-a-kind handmade gifts. Teacher
Jake Wiedeburg said the hands-on lessons were part of Sidney Public Schools’ Artist in Residence program.
