SIDNEY, Neb. — The Sidney Police Department is now accepting applications for its 2026 Citizen Police Academy, an eight-week program designed to give residents a firsthand look at local law enforcement operations.

Chief Sam Lovato said the academy is intended to provide transparency and strengthen relationships between officers and the community. Participants will learn about daily police work, including criminal investigations, evidence collection, use-of-force policies and de-escalation techniques. The program also includes opportunities to engage directly with officers and take part in a ride-along.

Applications are available at the front desk of the Sidney Police Department, located at 1200 Pole Creek Crossing. Completed applications must be submitted in person at the department by 5 p.m. Monday, March 2.

Participants must be at least 18 years old, live or work within Sidney city limits and successfully pass a background check.

“Our goal is to build a stronger, more collaborative relationship with the people we serve,” Lovato said. “By opening our doors to the community, we can work together to ensure Sidney remains a safe and informed city.”

Enrollment is limited to 15 participants for the inaugural class. Additional information is available by contacting the Sidney Police Department at 308-254-5515.
