SAGA grant supports Dalton VFD equipment upgrade

DALTON, Ne. -- The Sidney and Greater Area (SAGA) Fund awarded a grant to the Dalton Volunteer Fire Department to assist with the purchase of critical equipment for a new fire truck.

The $7,500 grant will help fund specialized firefighting equipment needed to outfit a replacement unit being acquired through the Nebraska Forest Service. The new truck will replace a 1985 model and will significantly expand firefighting capabilities. The upgraded unit will be able to transport 1,000 additional gallons of water, operate effectively in remote and rough terrain, and serve multiple roles including grass firefighting, water tender support, and structure protection.

The Dalton Fire Department serves about 680 square miles with a population of about 1,000 residents. In the last 12 months, the department has experienced an unusually high volume of grass fire calls, highlighting the need for updated and more reliable equipment. Several of the department’s current vehicles date back to the 1980s, making this project an important first step in a long-term plan to modernize the fleet.

The total cost of equipping the new truck is estimated at approximately $45,000. In addition to the SAGA grant, the department is securing matching funds through local contributions and proceeds from the sale of existing equipment. A truck planning committee has been meeting regularly to coordinate quotes, funding, and implementation.

The Dalton Volunteer Fire Department works closely with neighboring departments and regularly provides mutual aid throughout the region. The new equipment will enhance those cooperative response efforts and strengthen emergency services for all surrounding communities.
