SIDNEY, Neb. — The Knights of Columbus welcomed community members Friday evening for their annual Fish Fry at the St. Patrick’s Parish Center, marking the first Friday of Lent.

The event was held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the parish center, 1039 14th Ave., and featured battered cod — served beer-battered or Cajun style — along with baked potatoes, green beans, homemade coleslaw, rolls and cake.

“It’s the beginning of Lent. It’s the first Friday of Lent, so we’re having our fish fry,” said Clem Schumacher, finance secretary for the Knights of Columbus.

Adults were served for $10, children ages 7 to 14 for $7 and children under 7 ate free. Additional pieces of fish were available for $2 each. The organization also offered to-go orders for those unable to attend in person.

Schumacher said the annual meal is both a faith tradition and a way to serve the broader community.

“It’s just a good community service. It’s a good Catholic thing to do,” he said.

Proceeds from the event will go toward charitable efforts.

“We use the proceeds to benefit people in need and whatever comes about,” Schumacher said.

The Fish Fry is a longstanding tradition for the Knights of Columbus in Sidney, bringing families and parishioners together at the start of the Lenten season while supporting local outreach efforts.
