Kimball Residents may want to mark their calendars for June 25th. That’s the day their city’s pool will finally reopen.

"After June 1st, [the new DHM] had come out, and we had some better information through the DHM that we could have 50 people [in the pool]," Water Superintendent Carson Sisk said. "We thought that was at least worth getting the ball rolling to open it."

The Kimball City Council voted to approve the reopening at its meeting Tuesday night.

Now the staff prepares to welcome the public next week.

"As far as the city goes, we're all pretty comfortable with going ahead and opening it up and letting the public have some recreation this summer," Sisk said.

Certain restrictions from COVID-19 will be in place. The pool can hold 75 percent of its rated capacity as Kimball County enters phase three of reopening on June 22nd. This means there can be up to 150 people at the pool.

They will also not rent out equipment. Swimmers should bring their own goggles or floaties this year.

Hours or days of operation may also be less than usual due to a limited staff.

"We only have a staff of five and in order to allow the guards to have days off, because we're going to be asking 40 hours a week out of them which isn't typical of them, normally its 30 or 20," Sisk said.

The Kimball Pool only has five certified lifeguards and no one is currently holding classes for new guards to be certified.

One council member suggested having others do tasks like admission. Unfortunately, that is not an option.

"That's a nice thought, however, the people working have to be lifeguard certified in case of an emergency," Kimball Pool Manager Regan Hinton said. "If we had two lifeguards working and someone else working the counter, that person working the counter wouldn't be able to help in an emergency situation."

There may different rules, but Kimball residents will have a pool to enjoy this summer. Specific hours of operation have yet to be announced.
