Sidney Legion Teams Split with Gering

It was not the start the Sidney Juniors were looking for Tuesday night at Legion Field against the Gering B & C Steel Juniors. Sidney gave up 7 runs on 5 hits in the top of the first inning creating a big hole to climb their way out of.
But it didn’t take them long to get started. Sidney Center Fielder Jacob Dowse doubled to lead off the bottom of the first inning. He then advanced to third on a passed ball and scored Sidney’s first run on another passed ball.
After setting Gering down in order in the top of the second inning, Sidney sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning, scoring 9 runs on six hits, including 2 doubles and a triple.
Gering got one more run in the top of the fifth, but Sidney answered it with five of their own in the home half to close out the game with a 15-8 win. The game ended after five innings because of a 2-hour time limit.
Sawyer Dickman got the win for Sidney giving up 7 runs on 6 hits. He struck out 1 and walked 2 in 3 ? innings of work. Keenan Allen took the loss for Gering, giving up 8 runs on 10 hits in 3 ? innings.
Meanwhile, the Sidney Seniors fell to 2-4 on the season when they ran into a buzz saw against Gering Platte Valley Companies Seniors. Gering’s Jack Franklin pitched a gem, holding Sidney to just two hits on his way to an 8-0 shutout in 5 innings. He fanned the first seven batters he faced and ended the game with 11 strikeouts and no walks.
Sidney center fielder Tommy Ellwanger and catcher Nolan Hofrock led off the fourth inning with back-to-back singles, and it looked like Sidney might start to find a solution to the Gering’s starter. But Hofrock was thrown out at second on a fielder’s choice when Jacob Dowse tried to bunt both baserunners into scoring position. Gering first baseman Anthony Walker then chased down a foul ball in front of the Sidney dugout and threw to second baseman Blake Greene covering first to pick off Dowse at first to end the Sidney threat.
Franklin got the win for Gering. Sam Hashman took the loss for Sidney, pitching 4 ? innings while giving up 8 runs on 8 hits, striking out 3 and issuing only 1 walk.
Both the Sidney teams are back on the diamond tonight as they travel to Bridgeport to battle the Bombers for the third time this season. The Junior game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. with the Senior game to follow at 7:00 p.m.
