SIDNEY - Residents across western Nebraska and northeast Colorado welcomed the new year in snow boats and winter coats.

According to News Channel Nebraska Chief Meteorologist Geoff Fox, the Sidney, Kimball, Sterling, Ogallala and Chadron areas saw between one to three inches of snow Friday night. The most amount of snow fell around the North Platte region, where they saw four to eight inches of snow.

Winter weather advisories and warnings were issued through Saturday morning.

Very cold temperatures were observed overnight Saturday. The National Weather Service office in Cheyenne says Lisco recorded a low temperature of 25 degrees below zero. It was -15 at the Sidney and Alliance airports, -13 in Bushnell, and -10 in Scottsbluff, Sunol and Dix. Torrington was at nine degrees below zero.

Law enforcement in Garden County reported an ice jam and minor low-land flooding on the North Platte River near Lewellen and the Ash Hollow State Historical Park at 8:08 a.m. Sunday morning.

The NWS issued a flood advisory for Garden and Keith Counties. The minor flooding occurred in fields near the river, where it typically happens. No roads were impacted.

More snow accumulation is forecast for Wednesday, according to the weather service. Meteorologists say snow will develop ahead of a cold front Tuesday afternoon in Wyoming and will spread east through the night into Wednesday.

"Widespread snow and strong winds looking likely for Wednesday, along with very cold temperatures," the NWS said in a statement. "Many locations will see low temperatures below zero Wednesday and Thursday, especially east of the Laramie Range."

The weather service says impacts could be major with this week's winter storm system from Tuesday night through Thursday afternoon.
