There were no injuries last night when fire destroyed a car parked behind Memorial Hall at Chadron State College.

Chadron Fire Chief Branden Martens says the call came in shortly after 7:00 with the car already fully engulfed in flames.

The first truck on the scene sprayed it with water to start cooling the fire and to protect the car next to it. After a second engine arrived, foam was sprayed into the engine compartment to smother the fire.

Chief Martens says it appears the fire was electrical in nature and began in the engine compartment. The blaze was hot enough that it blew out the car’s tires.

Martens was pleased with the turnout by the Chadron volunteers on a cold night with light snow. The last of them left the scene a little after 8:00.

The chief also says Chadron police and Chadron State College security provided great assistance on the fire.
