Leyton splits doubleheader in cross border battle with Sedgwick County

OVID, CO — The Leyton Warriors traveled into Colorado Tuesday evening and came out 1-1 against the Sedgwick County Cougars in a girls and boys basketball doubleheader.
Sedgwick County claimed the girls game with a final score of 60-33. The Warriors won the boys contest 56-46.
The Lady Warriors got behind early against Sedgwick County and were unable to dig themselves out of the hole.
Leyton hit the first basket in the girls game before Sedgwick County went on a 12-0 run to take a 12-2 lead. The Lady Warriors then got into a rhythm, matching the Cougars the rest of the quarter. Sedgwick County took a 24-14 lead into the second.
Sedgwick County held Leyton to just four points in the second quarter to take a 35-18 lead into the half. The Cougars continued to slowly pull further away in the second half to win 60-33.
Abigail Dille led all scorers with 16 points for Sedgwick County. Kierra Ehnes had 15 and Jensen Renquist finished with 12 points for the Cougars. Zaili Benish paced Leyton with nine points.
The boys contest was close most of the first half. Over half of the Warriors points in the first two periods came from outside the arc. Leyton hit five three-pointers to lead 27-23 at halftime.
Sedgwick County outscored Leyton 6-2 to tie things at 29 in the third, but then Leyton pulled away. The Warriors embarked on an 11-2 run to end the third period, leading 40-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Cougars brought their deficit down to six, but never fully closed the gap as Leyton held on for the 56-26 win.
Four Warriors finished in double figures Tuesday night. Justin Ernest scored 13 points, Dillon Juelfs had a dozen while KJ Bush and Jason Jensen each finished with 10.
Levi Dille led the Cougars with 18 points while Rafe Buettenback scored 12.
Leyton is back on the court Friday, Feb. 4, at home against Creek Valley. Sedgwick County hits the road Friday to take on Merino.
