SCOTTSBLUFF – Gering tried to draw Sidney out of their 3-2 zone defense at the start of Tuesday night’s boy’s B-8 Sub-District semifinal. The plan helped the Bulldogs get off to a 4-0 start, which turned out to Gering’s biggest lead of the night. An Isak Doty three and a Sawyer Dickman driving layup gave Sidney a lead they would not relinquish on the way to a 67-56 win and a spot in Wednesday’s championship game against Scottsbluff.

Sawyer Dickman’s seven first-quarter points propelled the Red Raiders to a 10-6 lead after one period. Senior Wyatt Heckenlively spearheaded the Sidney attack with 6 points in the second period to send the Red Raider to the locker room leading 28-20 at half.

In the third quarter, Micah Schneider buried a pair of three-pointers, and Heckenlively tossed in 6 more points in the paint, to keep the Bulldogs at arm’s length and take 42-34 into the final period.

Every time Sidney stretched their lead, Gering made a run to stay within striking distance. Sidney eventually built a 17-point advantage in the fourth quarter, and then made 14 of 17 free throws down the stretch to secured the win.

Sidney finished with three players in double figures. Sawyer Dickman made 13 of his 15 free throws on the night to lead all scorers with 21 points. Wyatt Heckenlively added 14 points while Jacob Dowse chipped in 11 points.

Sidney will now face Scottsbluff at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday for the B-8 Sub-District championship. It will be the third time the Red Raiders and Bearcats have tangled in the last 18 days.
