NJC Notes: Baseball Sits in 2nd Place

Northeastern baseball was on the road this past weekend as they played Luna Community College in a 4-game series.

Northeastern baseball was on the road this past weekend as they played Luna Community College in a 4-game series.  The Rough Riders who have only won 7 games this season were able to split the series with the Plainsmen before the road trip continues.  NJC currently sits in 2nd place behind Region IX leaders Southeast Community College.  Northeastern travels to Southeast Community College this coming Saturday (9th) and Sunday (10th) in a showdown 3-game series that could make or break a run at regional champs.  A double-header will take place at 12pm and 2:30pm on Saturday and a single game at 12pm on Sunday.

(Game Recap 4/2) Plainsmen vs. Luna CC = Loss 14-4

Breakdown: Game called in 5 innings.  Luna had a huge 4th & 5th inning that proved too be to much for NJC.  Northeastern was out hit 15-3.  Sage Ferguson faced 22 batters in his 3rd loss of the season.  Sage in 3 innings had 7 earned runs, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts and gave up 8 hits.  Zach Boone had a homerun and 2 RBI's on his only hit of the game.  Catcher Guillermo Guzman hit a solo shot in the loss.  Luna CC had 3 players with at least 2 RBI's.

(Game Recap 4/2) Plainsmen vs. Luna CC = Won 7-5

Breakdown: Close game, but solid win for Plainsmen.  Game was tied going into the last at-bat, but Northeastern came through with 2 big runs that sealed the victory.  Clay Sanger got the start and pitched 4 innings, but it was Cole Adams who finished the job and walked away with his 1st win on the season.  Zach Boone again came up big at the plate with 2 doubles and a triple during the performance.  Calvin Davis and Will Togher combined for 3 hits and 4 RBI's.  NJC struck out 4 times.

(Game Recap 4/3) Plainsmen vs. Luna CC = Loss 7-2

Breakdown: All the action for this game happened in the 1st inning.  NJC scored their only 2 runs and Luna CC scored 6 runs that the Plainsmen never recovered from.  Calvin Davis and Mason Sauter combined for 2 hits including a double, a stolen base and NJC's only 2 RBI's in the loss.  Stevins Spurgeon made another appearance on the mound which ended in his 3rd loss of the season.  Stevins performace wasn't to bad as he only had 1 earned run, however he gave up 2 homeruns and walked 3.

(Game Recap 4/3) Plainsmen vs. Luna CC = Won 11-0

Breakdown: Game called in 5 innings.  In their best game of the weekend, NJC rolled right past the Rough Riders without any hesitation.  Ryan Jones pitched a complete game shutout to solidify his 2nd win that included 5 innings, 6 strikeouts and only gave up 3 hits.  Zach Boone hit 2 yard balls and knocked in 5 runs to continue his big series at the plate.  Charlie Hilgers batted in the DH spot and went 2-3 from the plate with 2 RBI's.  Northeastern out hit Luna CC 14-3.

Ryan Jones Gets Region IX Pitcher of the Week

Northeastern's 6' freshman Ryan Jones got the Region IX Pitcher of the Week nod as he had a solid week of the season from the mound.  Jones comes to NJC from Pawhuska, Oklahoma and pitches for the Plainsmen.  During the past week of the 2022 regular season for the Plainsmen, they played four conference games at Luna Community College in New Mexico.  This is the first Plainsmen pitcher to receive the Region IX Pitcher of the Week award this season.

During the Luna series, Jones pitched in the 4th game and solidified his 2nd season win.  In that game, Ryan faced 18 batters, pitched 5 shutout innings and only gave up 3 hits.  He also struck out 6 batters and had no walks or earned runs.  Overall this season, Jones has a 4.19 ERA, 19.1 innings pitched and 17 strikeouts.  He is 2-2 on the season recording 9 earned runs and only has 2 wild pitches.

Northeastern needs players like Ryan to continue the big play as the season progresses to give the team a threat in the pitching lineup in which other teams will have to be aware of.

Congrats to NJC pitcher Ryan Jones on being named Pitcher of the Week for Region IX!  Keep up the great work!

The Plainsmen next take on Southeast Community College in Nebraska on Saturday and Sunday this coming weekend.

Zach Boone Gets Region IX Player of the Week

Northeastern's 6'1" sophomore Zach Boone got the Region IX Player of the Week nod as he had a solid week of the season at the plate.  Boone comes to NJC from Larkspur, Colorado and plays the outfield position for the Plainsmen.  During the past week of the 2022 regular season for the Plainsmen, they played four conference games at Luna Community College in New Mexico.  This is the fourth Plainsmen to receive the Region IX Player of the Week award this season.

During the week, Boone played all 4 games Northeastern competed in during the weekend stretch.  In those games, Zach went to the plate 12 times, got a hit in 8 of those at bats and scored 7 times.  Those 8 hits included 3 doubles, 3 homeruns and 7 RBI's.  Big time batting rewarded Boone with a .667 batting average during the stretch.  Overall this season, Boone has a .365 batting average, .423 on-base percentage and a .859 slugging percentage.  Northeastern went 2-2 over the 4-game stretch with Boone's high level of play.

Northeastern needs players like Zach to continue the big play as the season progresses to give the team a threat in the lineup in which other teams will have to be aware of.

Tournament #2 in the Books

Northeastern men and women's golf competed down at La Junta this past week in their 2nd tournament of the Spring season.  NJC men placed 2nd behind McCook Community College by 15 strokes and NJC women placed 3rd behind Otero College by 28 strokes.  Due to the weather being uncooperative, the McCook tournament scheduled for this week will be moved to a 1-day event on Wednesday, April 13th.  After that, Northeastern will host a 2-day tournament at Sky Ranch Golf Course in Sterling.  Tee times will begin at 1pm on Thursday, April 14th and 9am on Friday, April 15th.

Plainswomen Winning Streak Ends at 13

After a big winning streak of 13, Northeastern softball's streak came to an end as the Lopes squeaked one past the Plainswomen in the 4th game of the series.  Northeastern hosted the Lopes in a 4-game series this past weekend at Mason Field and took 3 of 4 to continue their season at #1 in the region.  Program history was also made as sophomore Rylyn Nelson hit her 36th homerun as a Plainswoman in the series, putting herself at the top spot, a record she will certainly add to before the season is over.  Luna Community College comes to town for a 4-game series this coming weekend at Mason Field.  The series starts on Saturday, Apil 9th with games at 1pm and 3pm, then take place again on Sunday, April 10th at 11am and 1pm.

(Game Recap 4/2) Plainswomen vs. Lamar CC = Won 9-2

Breakdown: A big 2nd and 4th inning led the Plainswomen past the Lopes to start the series off with a win.  Shortstop Angelina Quezada went 3-4 from the plate that included a double, homerun and 4 RBI's.  Jacquelynn Siefkin also homered in the contest knocking in 3 RBI's herself.  Sara Lynch pitched another complete game for her 10th win on the season.  She faced 29 batters, struck out 6 and had no earned runs.  NJC out hit the Lopes 11-3 during the win.

(Game Recap 4/2) Plainswomen vs. Lamar CC = Won 16-8

Breakdown: Game called in 5 innings.  A monster 14-run 4th innging put away the Lopes for good in this game.  Pitcher Delaney Barrett got the start, pitched 3.2 innings until Avery Fox came in and secured the win.  Fox struck out 2 batters in just 1.1 innings pitched.  Rylyn Nelson went 2-2 from the plate that included a homerun and 2 RBI's.  Six different Plainswomen knocked in at least 1 run.  Angelina Quezada and Mia Glover combined for 3 homeruns and 7 RBI's in the win.

(Game Recap 4/3) Plainswomen vs. Lamar CC = Won 14-5

Breakdown: Game called in 5 innings.  The game was tied in going into the 3rd inning until NJC decided to turn on the bats, blasting in 9 runs and then adding 4 more in the 4th.  Sara Lynch pitched her 2nd complete game of the series as she won her 11th game of the season.  Lynch struck out 4 and only gave up 1 earned run.  She also went 2-3 from the plate with 2 RBI's.  Addy Deal and Katey Kelly each knocked in 3 RBI's.  5 Plainswomen had at least 2 RBI's in the contest.

(Game Recap 4/3) Plainswomen vs. Lamar CC = Loss 10-9

Breakdown: A very close game in which NJC made a run at the comeback win, but fell short in the 10th for their 1st loss in 14 games.  Michaela Moorehouse took the start for NJC and pitched 4.2 innings, giving up 6 earned runs while striking out 4.  Mia Glover had another big game as she had a double, homerun and 5 RBI's.  Catcher Andi Padilla went 2-4 from the plate knocking in 2 RBI's.  Northeastern out hit the Lopes even in the home loss.
