Sights and sounds: severe storms bring hail, heavy rain

A severe weather threat that lasted nearly four hours across the Nebraska panhandle and northeast Colorado Tuesday afternoon brought large hail, heavy rain, landspouts and a reported tornado near Sedgwick.

SIDNEY - A severe weather threat that lasted nearly four hours across the Nebraska panhandle and northeast Colorado Tuesday afternoon brought large hail, heavy rain, landspouts and a reported tornado near Sedgwick.

The first severe thunderstorm warning was issued shortly after 2 p.m. in Scotts Bluff County. Morrill, Garden, Kimball, Cheyenne, Deuel, Logan and Sedgwick Counties would also receive severe weather warnings. 

Ping pong ball size to golf ball size hail was reported in Morrill, Cheyenne, Deuel and Sedgwick Counties. One report indicated ping pong ball size hail at the Sidney airport. 

Sources spotted brief landspouts south of Bridgeport.

During the weather event, Sidney, Sunol and Lodgepole received 1.5 to 2 inches of rain. Kimball and Potter reported .25 inches. An inch fell north and south of Potter. .10 inches of rain was recorded in Bridgeport, near an inch in Lisco and Broadwater, and 1 to 1.5 inches fell in Ovid and Sedgwick. 

The severe weather postponed the American Legion Baseball game between Bridgeport and Sidney. No make-up date has been announced.
