SCOTTSBLUFF - The Sidney American Legion Seniors struggled at the plate for the second straight game Wednesday night. Sidney batters struck out nine times and managed only three hits in an 11-2 loss to the Westco Zephyrs in Scottsbluff. The loss drops Sidney to 1-12 on the season while the Zephyrs improve to 14-11.

Landon Riddle and Reid Fiscus opened the game for Sidney with a pair of strikeouts before Zech Roggasch reached base on an  infield single. However, Roggasch was thrown out attempting to steal second to end the inning. Porter Robbins led off the Zephyrs’ half of the first inning with a single, a stollen base, and then scored the first run of the game on a Sidney error to give Westco a 1-0 lead after one inning.

A pair of strike outs, a walk and a ground out set Sidney down quietly in the top of the third inning. However, the Zephyrs added to their lead in the bottom frame as they scored a pair of runs on three hits to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Both teams had big innings in the fourth. Sidney sent eight batters to the plate as Reid Fiscus opened the inning for Sidney with a line drive to left. Zech Roggasch reached base on a third strike passed ball followed by an RBI single by Connor Hurt, scoring Fiscus from third for Sidney’s first run. Roggasch scored when Ryder Bayne reached on an error by Zephyrs second baseman Moises Panduro. Hurt tied the game, at 3-3, scoring from third on a Westco overthrow.

The Zephyrs took control of the game from there, scoring six runs on six hits, including a leadoff triple from right fielder Gavin Baltz and doubles from Adan Vargas and Cortez Palomo, to give Westco a 9-3 lead after four complete innings.

Westco added a pair of runs on three hits in the fifth, including another double by Vargas, to end the game at 11-3.

Hunter Garcia got the win for the Zephyrs, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out nine and walking just two. Blaine Russell takes the loss, going the distance for Sidney. He gave up 11 runs on 14 hits, struck out two and walked three.

Sidney’s next action will be next Tuesday when they travel to Chadron for a Junior/Senior doubleheader.
