SCOTTSBLUFF - Sidney's Talissa Tanquary got her Cross Country season off to a successful start. The Red Raider junior crossed the finish line ahead of Leyton senior Axi Benish to capture first place in the Panhandle Classic Cross Country Meet at the Scottsbluff Country Club in Scottsbluff on Thursday. Tanquary, who finished third at last year’s State Cross Country Championships to pace the Sidney girls team to the Class C state championship, ran the 5K course in 21:21.57. Leyton’s Axi Benish was a close second in 21:50.21.

Sidney's top six finishers were Tanquary in first, senior Rheo Dykstra (24:21.26) finished 18th, junior Jenju Peters (25:14.01) was 25th, junior Avery Lawson (26:39.62) ended up 32nd, sophomore Ileana Neufeld (26:44.37) right behind in 33rd, and junior Daisy Garner (27:02.15) was 34th.

In the boys 5K race, Sidney had two runners in the top-10. Sophomore Noah Canas paced the Red Raiders finishing 5th in a time of 19:32.10. Fellow sophomore Jashawn Davenport captured 9th place in 19:42.59. Leyton senior Gabe Tretter rounded out the top ten in a time of 19:45.72.

Rounding out Sidney's top six finishers, junior Brenden Sheppard (20:07.60) hit the tape in 16th, sophomore Robert Stevens (21:49.99) came in 37th, senior Micah Schneider (21:57.89) was right behind in 38th, and junior John Meza (22:15.72) finished 41st.

Sidney returns to action when they head back to Scottsbluff for a meet on Friday before traveling to Cozad for the Cozad Invitational on Saturday.
