SPEARFISH, S.D. -- September 16, 2022 -- The Chadron State College volleyball team went to Spearfish and won its second consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match on Friday evening, beating Black Hills State in five sets (25-23, 25-18, 18-25, 13-25, 15-12) to advance to 4-7 on the year and 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The Eagles edged BHSU with a hitting team percentage of .153 against .149 for the home team.

CSC was led offensively by junior Lexi Hurtado with 11 kills. Sophomore Aiyana Fujiyama, and freshman Bella Adams both had 9 kills.

Defensively the Eagles were led by senior Abby Shaefer and sophomore Mayson Fago with 19 and 15 digs respectively. At the net, Fujiyama had a total of eight blocks.

The Eagles had trouble getting going in the first set, but they soon went on a 6-1 run to gain the momentum needed to carry them to a close victory.

In the second set, the Eagles were able to gain separation from the Yellow Jjackets to go up 18-8 at one point and never looked back, to take the second set.

The Yellow Jackets, who were led by Madison Hoopman with 16 kills, and Cerrone Kindra with 15 on the night, fought back in the third set. They took the third set by starting off up 10-5. The Eagles fought back to an 18-22 score, but the Yellow Jackets held on for the third set win.

The fourth set was all Yellow Jackets as they went on an 8-1 run to go up 15-10 on the Eagles. The Eagles cut the lead down to four at one point, but the Yellowjackets took the fourth set with all the momentum going into the fifth set.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an 8-5 lead on the Eagles in the final frame. The Eagles flipped the momentum, however, by a few misses by BHSU and a couple of kills by sophomore Amber Harvey.

After going back and forth with each other, the Eagles scored four straight points to go up 14-11, and eventually won 15-12 and the match for their second conference win of the season.

The Eagles continue on their South Dakota tour to Rapid City on Saturday, where they take on South Dakota School of Mines at 3 p.m.
