NU Notes: Huskers Down Eagles and Gamecocks
Statesboro, Ga.- The Nebraska rifle team defeated No. 17 Georgia Southern and No. 14 Jacksonville State on Sunday, moving to 2-0 on the season. The Huskers scored 4,677 to win the triangular, bettering the Eagles (4,628) and Gamecocks scored 4,613.
Freshman Vittoria Watts tied the Nebraska air rifle record with a score of 597, marking the second Husker freshman in as many days to tie a school record.
Watts joins the company of fellow freshman Emma Rhode, along with Rachel Martin (2014), Hannah Virga (2015), Elena Flake (2019), Emily Cheramie (2020) and Cecelia Ossi (2022) in the Husker record book.
"The team had a good air match today," said Head Coach Mindy Miles. "Tori tied the school record, Emma shot a solid 595, and Maddie fought through some adversity to show up for the team with a 592. The team is still trying to find their groove this season, and the freshman are learning how to travel and shoot back-to-back matches. It's a great introduction into the season, since this format will be seen a few times this year. Onto next weekend for a home match."
Huskers took three of the top five overall spots despite missing All-American Cecelia Ossi, who was competing with Team USA this weekend. Junior Madelynn Erickson placed second (1,174), Rhode placed third (1,172), and freshman Vittoria Watts placed fourth (1,172).
Erickson led Nebraska in the smallbore and placed second with a score of 582. She was joined in the top five by Rhode (fourth, 577). Watts (sixth, 575), Johannessen (seventh, 575) and Strauch (ninth, 569) also placed in the top ten in the event.

Nebraska will return home for a pair of matches against No. 2 Air Force on Oct. 22 and 23. The matches will start at 8 a.m. both days.
Huskers Finish Successful Weekend at ITA Regionals
Fayetteville, Ark. - Roni Hietaranta and Calvin Mueller both fell in the Round of 8 to cap off the final day of the ITA Regional Championships held at the Billingsley Tennis Center in Arkansas. This was the second-straight year the Huskers have sent a player to the Round of 8, with William Gleason doing so last year when the event was hosted at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
Mueller bested Oklahoma State's Carl Roothman, 6-0, 6-1, on Saturday to advance into the Round of 8. The Bruchkoebl, Germany native earned his fourth win of the tournament, but fell short to fellow Cowboy Alejandro Garcia, 6-2, 6-7 (10), 6-4, in the Round of 8. Mueller now holds a 5-2 record in the fall and leads the Huskers in wins.
Hietaranta joined Mueller in the Round of 8 after a three-set thriller against Drake's Jeremy Schifris, which he won, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (2). A year after his 22-win season with the Huskers, the Lappeenranta, Finland native ended his tournament run with a loss to Nathan Han of the Oklahoma Sooners on Sunday in consecutive sets, 6-4, 6-2.
Across the tournament, Nebraska had 12 wins in singles play which is the most they've had in fall competition this year. Every Husker has a win in singles play this season that has participated in at least one match.
In doubles play, all three duos won their opening-round matchup including a pair of tie-breaker wins to begin the morning. However, all three teams fell just short in the second contest, eliminating the Huskers from the doubles draw.
Nebraska will be back in action at the Big Ten Individual Championships which will be held in Ann Arbor, Mich., from Nov. 4-6.

Huskers Fall to Hawkeyes
Iowa City, Iowa – The Nebraska soccer team fell to Iowa 4-0 on Sunday afternoon in Iowa City.
For only the third time this season, the Huskers were outshot in the first half as the Hawkeyes held the 11-3 advantage. Despite NU not being able to find the back of the net in the first 45, junior Eleanor Dale had a pair of chances that were saved by the Iowa goalie.
Iowa (4-6-6, 1-3-4 Big Ten) scored its first goal of the game in the 32nd minute off a penalty kick. The Hawkeyes then extended its lead with an own goal by the Huskers in the 42nd minute. Iowa shot the corner kick into the goal box, which went off a Husker defender and into the net.
The Huskers entered halftime trailing 2-0, but edged Iowa in corner kicks (2-1) and tied the Hawkeyes in saves with three apiece.
NU (6-5-5, 4-2-2 Big Ten) started the second half aggressively on offense with a few more scoring chances highlighted by a play in the 61st minute. Sophomore Sarah Weber shot a pass downfield to Schwarz who gathered and took a shot in the penalty box which was saved by the Iowa goalie.
Although the Huskers tallied five shots in the second half, they were not able to record a finish as the Hawkeyes put the game out of reach with two goals in the second half. Iowa's Caroline Halonen scored in the 73rd minute and her teammate Hailey Rydberg recorded a goal of her own to take the 4-0 lead.
Overall, Iowa held the advantages in shots (20-7), shots on goal (8-5) and corner kicks (8-4).
Junior goalkeeper Sami Hauk recorded five saves in 90 minutes of action and was joined by Lauryn Anglim and Gwen Lane in playing the entire game.
The Huskers return home next to week host Penn State (Thursday at 7:05 p.m.) for their final home regular season game of the season. Fans can purchase tickets by calling 1-800-8 BIG RED or by visiting Huskers.com/tickets.
