Schroder, Petit carry Summerland to first playoff win in school history
Senior Kendrick Schroder had 110 yards rushing on 20 carries, filling in for injured running back Trevor Thomson, and the Summerland football team won their first postseason game in school history with a 28-14 victory over Bridgeport Thursday.
SUMMERLAND - Senior Kendrick Schroder had 110 yards rushing on 20 carries, filling in for injured running back Trevor Thomson, and the Summerland football team won their first postseason game in school history with a 28-14 victory over Bridgeport Thursday night at Summerland High School.
Thomson left the facility on a medical stretcher with a reported neck injury in the third quarter. The severity of the injury was unknown as of Thursday night. Thomson finished with 76 yards on 9 carries and a 45-yard touchdown run. He also had 43 receiving yards on four catches.
Senior quarterback Jaykwon Petit went 9-15 for 98 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Alec Schindler to open the scoring the first quarter. Petit added 29 rushing yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns.
Schindler caught four passes for 58 yards.
Senior Kason Loomis led the Bulldogs with 160 yards on 26 carries. Senior Parker Farrenkopf chipped in 114 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. He took over at fullback when junior Peyton Abbott left the game in the first quarter with an apparent right ankle injury.
Abbott had 16 yards on three carries before leaving the game.
Freshman Nik Wiebert threw for 56 yards on 3-6 passing. He connected with senior tight end Chase McGrath for a 45-yard touchdown to cut the Bobcats' lead to 20-14 early in the third quarter.
Bridgeport out-gained Summerland, 372-320, in total yardage. Each team turned the ball over once.
The Bulldogs finish the 2022 season, their first year in eight-man football and their first playoff appearance since 2020, with a record of 6-3. Bridgeport has a postseason record of 1-14.
The Bobcats, playing their second season of varsity football, improve to 6-3 and will play in the second round of the Class D1 playoffs for the first time in school history. The time and opponent next Friday will be released this weekend.
