NORTH PLATTE, Neb. -- Voters in North Platte have thrown their support behind millions of dollars worth of recreational upgrades.

Election results in Lincoln County show that Proposition 1 passed by an almost 2-to-1 margin Tuesday.

Its passage means a half-cent local option sales tax will be installed to help pay to reconstruct the city pool, recreation center and skate park.

The measure reached the ballot in an unconventional way. A citizen-led petition drive in August drew enough support to place the issue on the general election ballot. That came after the measure didn't garner enough support from North Platte's City Council to advance the measure by traditional means.
