A Pine Ridge Reservation man who pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter for accidentally shooting and killing a friend in February has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison.

20-year old Cassian Richards of Porcupine will spend 3 years on supervised release after completing his prison term for the death of 19-year-old Creighton Yankton near Porcupine.

Richards said in his factual basis statement that he had a loaded pistol in his car and that he “carelessly and recklessly jostled the firearm” while getting into the vehicle.

The gun went off and the bullet hit Yankton, who died at the scene within minutes of being struck.
