The No. 6 Nebraska Rifle team will travel to Fairbanks, Alaska, on Feb. 4-5 to compete in the Patriot Rifle Conference (PRC) Championships. The air rifle event will take place on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. (10 am) at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range and the smallbore event will take place on Sunday starting at 1 p.m. (central) at the Patty Gym Range.

Results for both days can be found at http://results.megalink.no/#!/ and a livestream for Sunday's smallbore event can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jZIUVzLlrE

The PRC field includes five of the top 11 teams in the nation, including No. 1 TCU, No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks, No. 7 Air Force, No. 11 Ohio State and UTEP, all of which the Huskers have faced this season.

"PRCs should be a great match for the team," said Head Coach Mindy Miles. "The format is exactly like NCAAs and it will give them a good preview to come. We are returning to Fairbanks, where the team had competed already this year and posted a season-high. I do believe this team can be strong competitors at this match."

During the regular season, NU has set various team and individual records. Freshmen Emma Rhode and Vittoria Watts both shot a 598 in the air rifle, which is a new school record in the event. Junior All-American Cecelia Ossi shot a 592 in the smallbore – the second-best score in Husker history.

As a team, Nebraska has shot its five highest team aggregate scores this season. Those aggregate scores are 4,726 (at Alaska-Fairbanks, 11/13/22), 4,719 (at Morehead State, 1/14/23), 4,717 (Air Force, 10/22/22), 4,715 (Ohio State, 1/28/23) and 4,714 (at Alaska-Fairbanks, 11/12/22). NU also shot a record 2,381 in the air rifle against Alaska-Fairbanks and a record 2,351 in the smallbore against Morehead State.

NU faced the Buckeyes last weekend at the Nebraska Rifle Range and posted a 4,715-4,651 victory. In that match, Huskers took four of the top five spots in all three events. Rhode placed first overall with a score of 1,181 and was followed by Ossi (second, 1,179), sophomore Mackenzie Strauch (third, 1,179) and Watts (fifth, 1,177). In the air rifle, Rhode was first (595), Ossi was second (595), Watts was fourth (593) and Strauch was fifth (592). Strauch took first in the smallbore with a score of 857, which was her personal best. Rhode placed second (586), Ossi placed third (584) and Watts placed fourth (584).

Following the conference championships, the Huskers will travel to Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA Qualifiers on Feb. 18 to face No. 11 Ohio State and No. 10 Akron at 8 a.m. (central).

Huskers Open Spring with Big Ten Match Play

The Nebraska men's golf team heads south to begin their spring season in Palm Coast, Fla. for Big Ten Match Play Feb. 3-4. The two-day tournament will be played on the Hammock Beach Resort and its Par-72, 6,981-yard layout. Alongside Nebraska, the two-day tournament includes host Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Penn State, and Rutgers.

First round pairings are based on GolfStat rankings as of Nov. 15, 2022. Nebraska, with their ranking of 73rd, will be the four seed and will play two seed Michigan State (55) in their Friday morning practice round, which tees off with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. (CT). In the afternoon, they will play five seed Minnesota (82) at 12 p.m. (CT) for their first match. Saturday's opponents will be based off Friday's results.

Jeremy Sisson leads the Big Red lineup, which features a strong group of veteran leaders and impact newcomers. Sisson, the junior from Skaneateles, N.Y., was one Nebraska's top performers in the fall, producing a 72.73 stroke average and setting career-highs in multiple categories, including a 68 (-4) and a sixth-place finish at the White Sands Invitational on October 30, 2022. He capped off his year with a win at the Dixie Amateur in Coral Gables, Fla. on December 17, where he led wire-to-wire and finished four rounds under par to secure the victory. Additionally, in the second round of the New Year's Invitational in St. Petersburg, Fla., he also tied his career-best, notching a 68 (-4) to help him place 14th.

Will Marshall (Elburn, Ill.) and Caleb Badura (Aurora, Neb.) are two seniors who will also be competing in Big Ten Match Play. Marshall competed in every round in the fall for Nebraska, where he achieved a 73.45 stroke average in 11 rounds. Meanwhile, Badura will make his 2022-23 debut after missing the fall. His presence and leadership will no doubt provide a boost for the Husker lineup, as the sixth-year senior has been one of Nebraska's most steady performers in his career, with a 75.50 stroke average over three seasons.

Reed Malleck, who also missed time in the fall, returned from injury at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational and played some of the best golf of his career. On the first day of the tournament, Malleck (York, Neb.) recorded a 69 (-3), a new career best. He also achieved his best 54-hole score in his career, notching a 219 (+3). Malleck will look to build on his success and momentum at Big Ten Match Play, where he went 3-0 last year on the same course.

The Huskers will have to replace arguably their top performer from the fall. Harry Crockett, the native of Oxted, England, will be away from the team this spring. Crockett, the former NJCAA All-American, accumulated a 71.82 stroke average in 11 rounds in the fall, which included a third-place finish at the Purdue Fall Invite on October 11. "I know we have some guys ready to step up and I can't wait to have Harry back next fall," head coach Judd Cornell said.

Two guys that will be expected to step up in his place will be Evan McDermott (Spring Lake, Mich.) and Quinn Yost (Farmington, N.M.), both true freshmen. Both have established themselves in the Husker lineup and will look to take big steps forward in their first spring action. McDermott carded a career-best 67 (-5) in the final round of the fall at the White Sands Bahamas Invitational on October 30, 2022, capping off his fall season with a 74.00 stroke average in eight rounds. Yost also competed in eight rounds, with a 74.50 stroke average.

Huskers Set Multiple Records to Close Fall
Harry Crockett fired a final round 67 (-5) and Jeremy Sisson were among the multiple Huskers who set career-highs to lead the Nebraska men's golf team to a season-best 13 strokes under par and a new fall season stroke average at the White Sands Invitational on Sunday, Oct. 30.

Nebraska opened the tournament by matching its best round of the fall season with a 280 (-8). After a second round 288 (E), a final-round 283 (-3) was not enough for the Huskers, but their three-round score of 851 (-13) set a new record for fall season stroke average. Nebraska's mark of 289.64 beat the previous record average of 290.67, which was set in Fall 2021.

Despite the records being set, Nebraska was unable to keep up with tournament champions Duke. The nationally ranked Blue Devils finished with an astonishing three-round aggregate score of 823 (-41). However, there was only a four-stroke difference between third place Arkansas State (-17) and Nebraska (-13).

Moving Forward
The Huskers will head west, traveling to Palm Springs, Calif. for two weeks, beginning with two practice rounds Feb. 11-12 on the PGA West Golf Course before heading to the Greg Norman Course for The Prestige, hosted by Stanford and running through Feb. 20-22. Then, the Huskers will head to Arizona, compete in the Desert Mountain Collegiate in Scottsdale March 4-5 before a Husker alumni event on March 14-18, also in Scottsdale.

Huskers Honor Military Hero Daegan Page

The Nebraska women's golf team will honor Marine Corporal Daegan Page from Omaha as part of the Folds of Honor Military Tribute Program during the spring of 2023.

Page, who was one of 13 service men and women killed in action while helping to evacuate people from the Kabul Airport in Afghanistan on Aug. 26, 2021, will have his name, rank and branch of service displayed on a Husker women's golf bag throughout the season.

Megan Whittaker, a graduate student from Elkhorn, Neb., will proudly carry the bag in Page's honor in the Huskers' first tournament of the spring as part of a nationwide program sponsored by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Folds of Honor is a preferred charitable partner of the WGCA and the GCAA, and the groups work together to ensure that no family is left behind in the fight to preserve American freedom. Through scholarships and other assistance, they give back to the spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to our country.

Daegan William-Tyeler Page would have celebrated his 25th birthday on Feb. 6, 2023, when the Husker women's golf team opens its spring season at the FAU Paradise Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla., on Monday. He was born in Red Oak, Iowa and moved to Omaha at age 5. He was an avid hockey player, competing for the state champion Westside Warriors, before graduating from Millard South High School in 2016. Page also loved skateboarding, the outdoors and animals.

Cpl. Page was a rifleman in 1st Platoon, Company G, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment.

Overall, the Huskers claimed eight first-team All-Americans and eight second-team All-Americans in 2022. The first-team All-American from Lee's Summit, Mo., is the first Husker woman to repeat as a conference javelin champion since Kayla Wilkinson in the Big 12 in 2005 and 2006.

Axelina Johansson took home the bronze medal in the shot put at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships as a true freshman, and she was named the Big Ten Women's Outdoor Freshman of the Year. She was the Big Ten outdoor runner-up and indoor bronze medalist and collected All-America honors at both NCAA meets. Following the outdoor season, the Hok, Sweden native finished 12th in the shot put at the World Athletics Championships with a new personal best of 60-11 1/4 (18.57m), the No. 2 throw in Nebraska outdoor history. Maxwell Otterdahl won both the shot put and discus gold medals at the 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championships and was named the Big Ten Men's Field Athlete of the Championships. The junior from Rosemount, Minn., became the first Husker male to win both the shot put and discus titles at the same conference meet since 2004. Otterdahl went on to finish 18th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the shot put and earn USTFCCCA Honorable Mention. He enters the season ranked fifth in school history in the outdoor shot put (65-6 3/4, 19.98m) and seventh in the indoor weight throw (68-5 1/4, 20.86m).

Jacob HydeCory Berg and Nick Bryant were part of the Nebraska men's 4x400m relay team that pulled off an upset win at the 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Racing in the first of two sections with the ninth-fastest seed time entering the meet, the Huskers got a strong anchor leg from Bryant to win section one in 3:09.51. That time held up against section two, despite Iowa and Ohio State possessing two of the fastest 4x400-meter squads in the country. It was the Huskers' first 4x400-meter relay conference title since 2016.

Bandoumel, Gary Undergo Surgery

Lincoln – A pair of Nebraska men's basketball players underwent successful surgeries late last week after suffering season-ending injuries in January.

Juwan Gary underwent left shoulder surgery on Jan. 25, and Athletic Trainer R.J. Pietig said that the recovery time should be between five and six months. Pietig said that Gary should be close to 100 percent by the end of summer workouts. Gary started NU's first 17 games in 2022-23 and averaged 9.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and a team-high 1.4 steals per game. He had a season-high 18 points in Nebraska's win at Minnesota on Jan. 7.

Senior guard Emmanuel Bandoumel underwent left knee surgery on Jan. 26, and the timetable on his recovery is between eight and nine months. Bandoumel started the first 20 games for the Huskers in 2022-23, averaging 8.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game. At the time of his injury, he was the only player to start all 20 games for the Huskers and helped Nebraska rank in the top 35 nationally in defensive efficiency at the time of his injury.

The Huskers are back at home this weekend, as they take on Penn State Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Tickets are available for the matchup by visiting Huskers.com/Tickets or calling the NU Athletic Ticket Office at 800-8-BIGRED.
