NU Notes: Husker Men Earn No. 5 National Ranking

The Nebraska men's track and field team earned its highest ranking in 10 years as it moved up one spot to No. 5 in the USTFCCCA National Track & Field Rankings released on Monday.

The Nebraska men's track and field team earned its highest ranking in 10 years as it moved up one spot to No. 5 in the USTFCCCA National Track & Field Rankings released on Monday. 

The last time the Husker men were ranked as high as No. 5 was in 2013. Arkansas, Washington, Texas Tech and Texas are the top four teams. 

Meanwhile, the Nebraska women climbed two spots in the USTFCCCA Rankings to No. 18 on Monday. The Huskers are the highest ranked Big Ten program in both the men's and women's national rankings this week. 

In the weekly USTFCCCA Event Squad Rankings, the Husker men are No. 1 in the shot put, No. 2 in the high jump, No. 3 in the 60-meter hurdles and No. 9 in the weight throw. 

The Husker women rank No. 1 in the triple jump, No. 1 in the shot put, No. 3 in the weight throw and No. 4 in the high jump. 

The Huskers will had to Fayetteville, Ark., for the Tyson Invitational this Friday and Saturday. 

Nebraska Set to Host Women’s Gymnastics Big Five Meets

Nebraska will serve as host for the 2023 Women's Gymnastics Big Five meets that will take place Feb. 24-25. The Big Fives feature two sessions of five Big Ten Conference women's gymnastics teams. 
 
Session I will take place on Friday, Feb. 24 and will feature Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan and Penn State, while Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State and Rutgers will compete in Session II on Saturday, Feb. 25.
 
General admission season ticket holders can purchase tickets today, starting at 2 p.m. Reserved season ticket holders can call the ticket office to purchase their tickets at 800-8-BIG-RED. 

General admission tickets for Feb. 24-25 will go on sale to the public on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. at huskers.com/tickets. 
 
The Big Ten regular season standings, which will be finalized following the Big Five meets, will also be used to determine the team seeding for the Big Ten Women's Gymnastics Championships on Saturday, March 18, at Iowa. The top four teams will qualify for the evening session of the championships and the remaining six teams will compete in the afternoon session. Full rotations can be found in the charts below.

Huskers Host Drake for Midweek Matchup

 

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men's tennis team is back on the court Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT as the Huskers play host to Drake at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. A live stream and stats of the match will be available on Huskers.com, and updates will be posted on @HuskerMTennis on Twitter.

Scouting Drake 
• The Bulldogs split a doubleheader on Sunday, losing to Cornell 4-3 and beating Washburn 6-1. 
• Jeremy Schifris is Drake's top singles player coming in at No. 34 nationally. 
• Drake is 0-2 on the road so far this season. In 2022, the Bulldogs compiled a 5-10 road record. 

Series History
The two teams have played 22 times, with the Huskers going 10-12 in those contests. The most recent match up came on Jan. 29, 2022, in Lincoln, Neb., which the Huskers won 4-3. Nebraska's longest win streak against the Bulldogs is six, which came between 2002-2006. 

Quick Notes
• Sophomore Ilarion Danilchenko made his season debut on Saturday, but came up just short against Cornell's Jack McCarthy in singles 6-1, 6-4.
• The pairing of Shunya Maruyama and Nic Wiedenhorn have established themselves as one of Nebraska's best doubles duo so far this season. The pair is 2-1 in the spring, including a come-from-behind-win on Saturday against Cornell to clinch the doubles point for NU.
• New individual and doubles rankings come out on Wednesday Feb. 8. The Huskers' lone ranked player is Roni Hietaranta, who is currently ranked No. 75 in singles play. Hietaranta is 2-2 in singles this spring.

Huskers Claim Three Event Titles Against No. 17 Iowa

Lincoln The Nebraska women's gymnastics team claimed three event titles against Iowa Monday night. Kinsey Davis claimed the vault title with a 9.850, Emma Spence finished in first on uneven bars with a 9.825 while Sophia McClelland notched a 9.925 on balance beam for the event title. Despite claiming three event titles, the Huskers fell to No. 17 Iowa, 195.300-196.475. 

Rotation One
The Huskers started the night on vault, earning a team score of 48.950. Kinsey Davis led the Big Red with a 9.850 followed by Emma Spence with a 9.825. Katie Kuenemann and Martina Comin each notched a 9.775 while Ayzhia Hall added a 9.725. Sophia McClelland rounded out the rotation with a 9.600. 

The Hawkeyes competed on uneven bars for rotation one, tallying a 48.825. Ella Castellanos and Adeline Kenlin led Iowa with a 9.800. 

Rotation Two
Nebraska moved to uneven bars for rotation two, notching a team score of 48.325. Spence led NU with a 9.825 and claimed the event title while Clara Colombo tallied a 9.750. McClelland and Genesis Gibson each earned a 9.600 while Emma Simpton earned a 9.550. Davis finished the rotation with a 9.225. 

Karina Munoz and JerQuavia Henderson both led Iowa, each notching a 9.850 on vault during rotation two to earn a share of the event title with Davis. Iowa finished with a 49.125. 

Rotation Three
McClelland led the Huskers in rotation three, notching a career-best 9.925 on balance beam. Simpton followed with her personal-best score of 9.875. Colombo earned a 9.800 while Allie Gard finished with a 9.750. Hall added a 9.650 while Spence earned a 9.475. NU finished the rotation with a team score of 49.000. 

Henderson led the Hawkeyes on floor, earning a 9.925. Iowa finished with a 49.225 during rotation three. 

Rotation Four 
Spence led NU in the final rotation with a 9.900 on floor as the Huskers finished with a team score of 49.025. McClelland followed with a 9.850 while Kylie Piringer notched a 9.800. Halle Rourke tallied a 9.750 and Kuenemann finished with a 9.725. Gard rounded out the rotation with a 9.550. 

Adeline Kenlin and Karina Munoz both tallied a 9.925, helping the Hawkeyes to a team score of 49.300 on balance beam. 

Iowa claimed the meet victory with a score of 196.475 while Nebraska finished with a 195.300. 

All-Around
Munoz claimed the all-around title with a 39.350. Spence finished in second with a 39.025 while McClelland finished in third with a 38.975.
