Driver of the vehicle died at the scene

ILIFF, Colo. -- A Logan County Sheriff's Deputy is in stable condition as of this morning after responding to an injury accident on Interstate 76 about 15 miles east of Sterling.
At about 3:45 p.m. Monday, April 17, Logan County Deputies, along with the Crook Fire Department, and Sterling Fire Department responded to an injury accident on I-76 at milepost 141.
According to the Logan County Sheriff's Office, initial reports indicated the vehicle was on fire and the driver was trapped. Logan County Deputy AJ McGuffin arrived on scene first, and attempting to extinguish the fire, along with several bystanders using fire extinguishers. Dep. McGuffin, although overcome with smoke, continued to try and save the driver, and continued to try and put out the fire.
An explosion occurred in the vehicle and Dep. McGuffin began to show signs of respiratory distress. Dep. McGuffin was moved to an ambulance at the scene and transported to Sterling Regional Medical Center.
Dep. McGuffin arrived at the hospital conscious but in a lot of pain. He was met by a full trauma unit, and was quickly sedated and intubated to help him breathe. Dep. McGuffin was stabilized and flown to Swedish Medical Center where he was admitted into the ICU of their burn unit. As of this morning, Dep. McGuffin is stable and receiving the treatment he needs.
The driver of the vehicle did not survive her injuries and was pronounced dead on scene. The crash is being investigated by the Colorado State Patrol, and any details about the crash will be released by their agency.
