SIDNEY -- Sidney School District Superintendent Jay Ehler announced Monday evening Sidney Regional Medical Center has donated two Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to the district.

"When the school approached us about the opportunity, to help them be prepared for unforeseen circumstances, we were happy to help. Having these devices available are critical for preparedness efforts and in response times," said Sidney Regional Medical Center CEO Jason Petik.

An AED can be used to assist a person in cardiac distress. It is designed to lead a responder step-by-step through the process of operating the device.

An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. It's a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm, according to the American Red Cross.

The District had two in place before SRMC donated an additional two units: one at Sidney High School and one at West Elementary. The additional units will include one at the Sidney Middle School and the second a mobile unit that will be taken to events such as sports competitions.

In Monday night's school board meeting, the board of education also reviewed and approved the School Wellness Policy.

The policy outlines goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity and other school-based activities designed to promote wellness in students. The Wellness Policy includes committing the District to participate in state and federal child nutrition programs, provide professional development, support and resources for staff about student wellness.

The policy also calls for the District's curriculum to include direction on physical instruction and habits for healthy living.
