Leeling verbally commits to high jump at Nebraska
SIDNEY - Ever since Karsyn Leeling was a little girl, she has dreamed about competing for the Cornhuskers.
Up until her freshman year at Sidney High School, her dream was to play for the University of Nebraska volleyball team. That dream changed when she was asked by her coaches to compete in high jump for the Lady Raiders track & field team.
"You will never know what you are capable of if you don't try new things," Leeling said in a post on Instagram on Tuesday.
Her move to the high jump pit led to three gold district medals, three state medals (including a state championship last spring in Omaha) and a runner-up finish at the Coast2Coast International Meet at the Gold Coast Performance Centre in Australia this summer.
It also earned her an offer to compete in high jump at her dream school.
"I'm beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln," Leeling announced on social media on Tuesday. "Thank you, dad, for all you have done. Thank you, mom, for being my number one fan since day one. You have put endless amounts of dedication into my athletics."
With her senior season still to come this spring, Leeling has already earned 74 total track and field medals in her career, she's set new school records at Sidney and has a personal best high jump of 5'10".
Leeling, who originally committed to Doane University, continued in her social media post thanking her family, friends and coaches for their endless support.
She also competes in volleyball and basketball at Sidney High School.
