Tanquary, Kampfe lead Sidney to district cross country championship
OGALLALA - Daisy Garner's pass of Broken Bow's Anette Guevara at the finish line was enough to lift the Sidney girls cross country team to a Class C-5 District Championship at Crandall Creek Golf Course in Ogallala on Wednesday.
The Lady Raiders edged McCook for the team title, 44-45, and will run at the Nebraska School Activities Association State Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 20 in Kearney, seeking their second state championship in school history. Sidney won the team title in 2021.
"Five out of our six runners ran their personal best this season," Head Coach Donna Wiedeburg said. "Our goal going into today was to win districts. We knew McCook and Broken Bow would be tough to beat. They worked hard and raced well as individuals and as a team."
Broken Bow was third in the team race.
The district meet was moved up a day to the threat of weather on Thursday.
Sidney was led by individual runner-up Talissa Tanquary. The senior ran the 5K course in a time of 19:53. Lindee Henning, of Ogallala, was the individual champion in a time of 18:47.
Kylee Kampe joined Tanquary on the medal stand in fifth place. The freshman ran a time of 20:41. Emily Bashtovoi was 18th and Garner finished in 19th. Other members of Sidney's state qualifying team include Laurel Dadgostar and Kyah Hicks.
"We are excited to head to State Cross Country at UNK next Friday," Wiedeburg said. "We love hills!"
The Lady Raiders haven't had an individual state champion since Kaitlyn Wells did it her freshman year in 2007.
Noah Canas led the Sidney boys team in 31st place. No Red Raiders qualified for the state meet.
Tyler Hertz (16:22) and Parker Graves (16:56), both of Gothenburg, finished first and second to help the Swedes dominate the boys team standings. Gothenburg scored 16 points. Team runner-up Holdrege finished with 41 points.
The NSAA State Cross Country Meet will be held at the Kearney Country Club.
