Eagles sweep the Grizzlies
CHADRON, Neb. -- The Chadron State College volleyball team defeated the Adams State Grizzlies in straight sets Saturday night in the Chicoine Center, winning 25-17, 25-23 and 25-21.
The Eagles improve to 11-7 overall and 6-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Adams State drops to 5-13 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
CSC outhit their opponent .264 to .127 in the victory.
Chadron State built an early 8-2 lead in set one and scored the final four points of the set. Trailing 15-11 in set two, the Eagles scored six straight points to gain a brief lead. The Grizzlies regained the lead at 22-21 but CSC scored four of the final five points to win.
Set three saw the Eagles trailing 10-9 before a kill by Rylee Greiman and five straight errors by the Grizzlies gave CSC a five-point lead. Adams State lowered the deficit to one for a point but CSC held the lead for the remainder of the match.
Kally Kirkwood, a freshman from Fleming, Colorado, had a match high 15 kills and hit .500, both career highs. Mayson Fago, a senior from Evans, Colorado, added 12 kills.
Kally's sister, Kendyl Kirkwood, a junior also from Fleming, had a match high 43 assists, an average of 14.33 per set, a new season high.
Alondra Hernandez, a junior from Provo, Utah had a match high 17 digs. Lexi Hurtado, a graduate student from Aurora, Colorado and Greiman, a graduate student from Windsor, Colorado, added 15 and 10 digs, respectively.
Kally Kirkwood and Bella Adams, a sophomore from Pueblo, Colorado, each had three blocks.
The Eagles have a short rest before traveling to Grand Junction, Colorado on Tuesday. A match with Colorado Mesa is on the schedule for CSC. The Mavericks were ranked #10 in the nation on Monday, October 9. The Mavericks defeated #11 ranked Regis in four sets today, improving their record to 18-1 overall and 8-1 in the RMAC.
