SIDNEY, Neb. -- The Cheyenne County Commissioners, on Monday, were asked to support funding for a 4-H Assistant position that would work with Cheyenne and Deuel counties.

The board then learned Extension Educator Laura Narjes has taken a different position and will be resigning.

Narjes approached both Cheyenne and Deuel County commissions earlier in the year with the proposal of a position funded by both counties. She said this morning the position should be filled quickly so that person can be trained for the 2024 fairs.

"I think it is important to get this person in place and trained," she said.

She added that Lynn McKinny is retiring, and Narjes has accepted a position with Adams Industries.

"I'm trying to do everything in my power to make this transition smooth," she said.

She stressed she did not apply for the position; Adams sought her.

The Cheyenne County commissioners were concerned they would be hiring someone who would be answering to the person who takes over Narjes' position. Commissioner Randy Miller also expressed concern that she would not have time to train the assistant if she is already working at Adams.

Narjes said other Extension educators in the region would help the new Educator who fills her position. She said she is concerned the position will not be filled in a timely manner.

The commissioners decided to table the decision until the next meeting.
