Local officials preparing for significant weather change
Today, November 22, might be the warm before the storm as Panhandle temperatures are in the 60s. That all changes starting Thanksgiving as a cold front, with the possibility of snow, is expected.
SIDNEY -- Meteorologists are predicting a significant snow storm possible for Thursday and through the weekend.
Snow amounts will vary by location. The National Weather Service predicts an 62 percent chance of at least 4 inches of snow in Sidney November 23 through Saturday November 25. Kimball's chances of 4 inches or more is at 71 percent.
The further west and north of Sidney, the stronger the chances of significant snowfall, according to the National Weather Service maps.
"We know that there are estimates of anywhere between four and eight inches. What I've received from the National Weather Service is that Sidney is a 62 percent chance of four inches or more, but only a 13 percent chance of hitting eight inches, so my guess is it will be somewhere around there; hopefully, much less. I know a lot of models are showing it going mostly north of us. As usual, Sidney will have all of their street department and all of the other departments will be on standby -- if we need to clean the streets -- and if so, we will be sending out a snow emergency media release if need be," said Sidney City Manager David Scott.
Temperatures are expected to drop from the mid to high 60s today to a high of the mid 30s Thanksgiving and the teens through the weekend.
Commuters are encouraged to drive safely and with an emergency kit.
