The Kimball Longhorn girls and boys got their basketball seasons off to a start last night against the Bayard Tigers. The Longhorns traveled to Bayard for their official opening season games, after both the boys and girls lost to Alliance in the “Hall of Fame Jamboree” preseason warmup games on Monday in Alliance.
The Lady Longhorns suffered a 53-6 loss to the Lady Tigers, running into a many of the same talented athletes who were a part of the volleyball team that went undefeated throughout the regular season and district play, only to lose in the first round of the state tournament. The Kimball girls struggled to even get the ball past mid court, as Bayard’s stifling full court press forced dozens of turnovers and steals throughout the game.
The boys’ game was almost a mirror image of the girls, with Kimball proving they will be a force to be reckoned with in the C2-12 district.  The Longhorns ran the full court press successfully for much of the first half, forcing turnover after turnover, and creating plenty of easy shots under the basket. Kimball held Bayard scoreless throughout the 3rd quarter and most of the 4th quarter, as Bayard only managed to tally 2 points the entire 2nd half of play. Individual stats were unavailable but Kimball put together a real team effort on the night. Defensive player of the game honors would have to go to Ryker Behrend for his quickness and hustle, as he was all over the court, forcing several turnovers and stealing the ball several times. With so many weapons in their arsenal it’s hard to single out the play of any one player, but other standouts on both offense and defense included Braxton Miller, Brandon Paxton, Kyler Lusche, and Landon Norberg coming off the bench and contributing to the cause.

The Longhorn girls and boys will be in action again tonight, as they travel to Dalton to face the Warriors in Leyton’s season opener.
