SIDNEY - The Sidney Lady Raider and Red Raider basketball teams remain unbeaten after capturing the tournament championships of the Sidney Holiday Shootout at the Cabela’s Athletic Facility on Saturday. The Lady Raiders handed Gordon-Rushville only their second loss, defeating the Mustangs 68-27 for the girl’s title. The Red Raiders had a tougher time overcoming a second half surge by Chase County to snag the boys title with a 43-35 win over the Longhorns.

The Lady Raiders opened the tournament o Friday against winless Lexington and had no trouble disposing of the Minutemaids 64-7. Sidney scored over half of their points off of Lexington turnovers to move into Saturday’s championship game. Kayla Westby paced Sidney with 16 points.

Karsyn Leeling exploded out of the gate on Saturday, scoring Sidney’s first 10 points and propelling the Lady Raiders to a 20-3 first quarter lead. The senior ended the afternoon with a game high 26 points to lead 12 Lady Raiders in the scoring column. Sidney’s defense held Gordon-Rushville’s scoring leader, Haley Johnson, to just nine points. The senior, who averages 19.3 points per game, reached the 1000 career points mark on Friday in a 30-29 double overtime win over Chase County. The Lady Raiders improved to 10-0 on the season.

The Red Raiders opened the tournament Friday by holding 1-6 Lexington to single digits or less in each quarter, and scoreless in the third, on the way to a 58-21 semifinal win. Sophomore Keian Kaiser paced nine Red Raiders in the scoring column with 18 points. Senior Isak Doty added 12 points.

In the championship game on Saturday the Red Raiders built a 13-point halftime lead against the Chase County Longhorns. However, the Longhorns rallied out of the locker room to hold Sidney to just four points while posting 17 of their own to tie the game at 28 heading into the final period. Junior Landon Riddle scored seven of his game-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead Sidney to a 43-35 win. Keian Kaiser chipped in 13 points to help lift the Red Raiders to a 10-0 record.

The Sidney Lady Raiders will face 8-0 Lincoln Christian in the Girls Basketball Showcase at Kearney High School on Saturday while the Red Raiders travel to McCook to face the Bison.
