Dix, Potter, Sidney and Kimball Volunteer Fire Departments teamed up to fight a grass fire directly north of Dix Wednesday afternoon.

The fire that was first reported shortly before 3 pm, began at a ranch roughly three miles north of Dix on county road 59. Burning with the wind to the southeast the fire quickly endangered several structures and forced neighboring ranchers to move cattle from the pasture.

The fire quickly destroyed an abandoned home and burnt an empty barn along with several acres of grassland. Corrals on the ranch also sustained considerable damage though two oil tanks in the path of the flames were spared.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
