The Kimball Police Department hosted a less lethal impact training on Wednesday. Better known as a "bean-bag" round, the projectiles are fired from shotguns as a method of subduing a subject without serious harm or death.
Law enforcement came from Missouri, South Dakota, Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska for the training. This was an instructor certification or "train the trainer" event so most of those in attendance3 were senior officers or sergeant and above. Less lethal weapons have grown in popularity of late and with good reason.
"It provides us another force option before moving to lethal force," Kimball Police Chief Jose Ruiz said. "If the only tool you have is your firearm, then that is what you will use."
A believer in and certified trainer of less lethal tactics, Ruiz plans to certify all Kimball officers to use tasers, bean-bags and pepper balls.
Ruiz and the Kimball Police Department will host a pepper ball training in August, which is likely to draw a similar crowd.
