Severe weather delays start of Sidney demolition derby

SIDNEY - Demolition derby fans were rushed for cover as a severe warned storm approached the Cheyenne County Fairgrounds on Saturday evening.
Gusty winds, heavy rain and cloud to ground lightning delayed the start of the Rumble on the Rails Demolition Derby. Officials tell News Channel Nebraska they're aiming for a start time of 8 p.m., depending on the weather. If there's a lightning strike within five miles of the fairgrounds, it would delay the derby another 30 minutes.
The fair board is aiming to run the derby Saturday night.
A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for Sidney until 6:30 p.m. Radar indicated quarter size hail. The National Weather Service reported a wind gust of 62 mph near Lorenzo at 5:18 p.m.
Derby fans took shelter in the beer garden and exhibition building.
