Sidney Shuts Out Mitchell for Fourth Win
SIDNEY – Junior quarterback Alek Doty threw for five touchdowns, and ran for another, as Sidney earned a Homecoming victory over Mitchell 42-0 Friday night at Weymouth Field. It was the second shutout in a row for the Red Raiders, who handed Holdrege a 42-0 loss last week.
The Red Raider defense set the tone early, giving up only one yard on Mitchell’s opening possession of the game. After Mitchell’s 29-yard punt, Sidney began their most methodical drive of the night at their own 36. The Red Raiders covered 64 yards in 10 plays, capped off by Doty’s first TD pass of the night, a three-yard toss to tight end Patrick McCartney.
After Sidney forced a Mitchell punt at mid-field on the Tigers’ second possession, the Red Raiders began their longest drive at their own 14. However, it too Sidney only six plays to find the end zone as Doty connected with Landon Riddle for a 41-yard touchdown pass to extend the Red Raiders’ lead to 14-0.
The first turnover of the game came after sophomore Kale Kaiser picked off Tiger quarterback Adriane Garza at the Sidney 43 and returned it to the Mitchell 48 yard line. Following a 9-yard run by running back Owen Gillham, Lance Holly took the toss on a jet-sweep and ran 39 yards for Sidney’s third score. The PAT was successful and the Red Raiders led 21-0.
Following the ensuing kickoff, Mitchell fumbled on their third play and Doty threw just his second interception of the season on the Red Raiders’ third play, The Tigers went three-and-out and punted to the Sidney 42. Doty hooked up with Riddle on the Red Raiders’ first play for a 58-yard touchdown pass to increase the Sidney lead to 28-0.
The Red Raiders finished the first half with one more score after recovering a Mitchell fumble at the Tiger 33 yard line. Doty topped off the six-play drive with a 17-yard scamper for make the halftime score Sidney 35, Mitchell 0.
The 35-point running clock was in effect as the third quarter began. A bad shotgun snap on Sidney’s initial drive of the second half turned into the Red Raiders’ second turnover at Sidney 42. Mitchell drove to the Sidney 8, but the Red Raider defense, with several second line players in the game, stopped the Tigers on downs at the 10. Sidney capped the scoring on the subsequent possession when Doty found Riddle for a 78-yard TD pass to make the final score 42-0.
Alek Doty completed eight of his 11 passes for 259 yards, five touchdowns, with one interception. Landon Riddle caught five passes, three of them for touchdowns, for 214 yards, Owen Gillham rushed 9 times for 61 yards. Sidney rushed for 150 yards and threw for 268 yards for 418 yards of total offense. The Red Raider defense held Mitchell to just 118 yards of total offense. Sidney has given up a total of three touchdowns so far this season, and has not allowed a score in its last ten quarters of play.
