CHADRON – The third time was a charm for the Chadron Cardinal volleyball team Tuesday night at Chadron High School. The Sidney Lady Raiders and the Cardinals had met twice previously this season, with Sidney coming away with close, straight set victories each time. After dropping the first set, Chadron rebounded for a resounding 23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18 win.
The match was close throughout the first set with Sidney coming from behind for a 25-23 win. However, the second set was never close. Chadron bolted to a 9-0 lead and never looked back. After a Sidney rally cut the lead five, the Cardinals responded to take their largest advantage of the set to 20-10. The Lady Raiders rebounded to shrink the Cardinal lead to 21-15 before Chadron closed the set for a 25-16 win to tie the match at a set apiece.
Set three seemed to awakened the Lady Raiders, as they exploded to a 14-6 advantage. But the Cardinals bounced back with a 13-3 run to take the lead 19-17. Chadron carried that momentum to a 25-20 win to go up two sets to one.
The final set was played close early, but the Cardinals slowly gained control moving out to a 18-10 lead before winning the match with a 25-18 win.
Junior Paige Slingsby led Chadron with 14 kills while freshman Jazy Alcorn added 11 kills. Chadron improves to 13-18 on the season while Sidney falls to 15-13. The Lady Raiders return to the court on Thursday when they travel to Bayard to face the Tigers. The Junior Varsity match begins at 4:00 p.m. followed by the Varsity match at 5:00 p.m.
