ALLIANCE, Neb. - Authorities in Box Butte County cautioned residents about a scam in which individuals, posing as Alliance Police officers, attempted to extort money from unsuspecting citizens.

According to police, the scammers used the department’s non-emergency phone number, (308) 762-4955, to make their calls appear legitimate. The scammers, claiming to be Lieutenant Felker, demand payment - often in the form of money or Bitcoin - under the threat of issuing arrest warrants if their demands are not met.

“The Alliance Police Department does not and will never conduct business in this manner,” Officer Sherlock said. “These scammers are deliberately impersonating law enforcement to intimidate and defraud our residents. We want the public to know that we would never ask for money or Bitcoin over the phone.”

APD provided guidelines for residents to protect themselves:

  • Hang up immediately. Do not engage with the caller or provide any personal or financial information.
  • Verify the call. If you’re unsure of the legitimacy of a call, contact the Alliance Police Department directly at 308-762-4955.
  • Report the scam. If you believe you have been targeted, report the incident to APD promptly.

The police department is actively investigating the scam and encourages anyone with information to come forward.

“Scammers rely on fear and confusion to exploit their victims,” Officer Sherlock said. “By staying informed and cautious, we can work together to protect our community.”

Residents are urged to share this warning with family and friends to prevent others from falling victim to the scheme.
