SIDNEY -- When the Sidney Public School District board of education approved closing North Elementary, the plan included moving students to existing elementary schools.

Teachers and staff adjusted their teaching method for additional students. Now the District is adjusting the focus of South and Central Elementary Schools. South Elementary School Principal Rick Meyer said the adjustment will be better for the students and the educational process. South Principal Rick Meyer said the proposal is to better align students to the space needed.

"What we're doing is looking at realigning our grade levels again. What we found is that South having it be a one through three building is crowded, and so drop-off/pick-up time is very crowded and congested for parents. And not only that, but in the school itself, especially our second and third grade hallway is very busy. We have a lot of traffic, coming from specials, going to recess, going out to recess, a little bit of a disruption in learning ideal. " Meyer said.

In the Monday, February 10 school board meeting,Central Elementary Principal Erin Meyer reminded the board and the public South and West Elementary Schools have the majority of previously North Elementary students.

"I think as most of you as board members are well aware South and West absorbing kind of North Elementary's grade levels have created some unique challenges, South specifically space-wise that couldn't be predicted. I think you guys predicted the best you could to do space, but you run into challenges as you work through it," she said.

South Principal Rick Meyer said the adjust considers design of the schools and space needed by the students.

"So what we're doing is looking at shifting that, so Pre-K and Kindergarten will come over to South, South will be a Pre-K through First Grade building, Pre-K has less sections so they take up a little bit less classroom space, which would help spread kids out a little bit more, and then Central would be our Second and Third Grade building," Rick Meyer said.

Central Elementary Principal Erin Meyer said she has had positive feedback on the proposal. She added realigning the schools will allow for more curriculum collaboration. Rick Meyer said the move should not be as extensive as previous. The modular at North Elementary is still planned for move to West Elementary.

Superintendent Andrew Farber said February 10 no board vote was required.
