SIDNEY, Neb. — Sidney High School senior Patrick McCartney is taking his football talents to the next level, signing with Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa Wednesday to continue his athletic and academic career.

He played Tight End for the Sidney Raiders and will be playing Tight End for the Grand View University Vikings as well.

McCartney, a four-year, three-sport athlete, received offers from seven other schools but ultimately chose Grand View for its strong coaching staff, winning tradition and proximity to family. The Vikings boast eight conference titles and were crowned 2024 NAIA National Champions.

“I really liked the coaching staff and their program,” McCartney said. “They have eight conference titles and were national champions in 2024.”

McCartney, affectionately known as “Patty” by his Sidney classmates, said playing college football has been a lifelong dream.

“I have always wanted to play football in college since I was a young child, so this is a dream come true,” he said.

His mother, Ann McCartney, shared her excitement about her son’s decision, noting that his commitment to Grand View means he will be close to family in Des Moines.

Beyond the field, McCartney will study business but remains undecided on his career path. He credits his time as a Raider athlete for teaching him accountability, leadership, dedication and confidence in both academics and athletics.

As McCartney prepares for his next chapter, he leaves behind a legacy at Sidney High School, including a runner-up finish at 190 pounds in the 2025 NSAA State Wrestling Championships last Saturday in Omaha.
