Banner County grass fire contained as fire weather watch looms for region

BANNER COUNTY — Firefighters from across the southern Nebraska Panhandle battled a rugged grass fire in the Hackberry area of Banner County Monday afternoon that scorched nearly 20 acres.

The fire was first reported around 2:50 p.m., prompting Banner County Volunteer Fire & Rescue to respond and request immediate mutual aid from Potter and Bridgeport departments. Upon arrival, crews found active flames and trees torching in difficult terrain. Additional support was called in from Bayard, Minatare and Scottsbluff Rural to help contain the blaze.

A perimeter was quickly established and mop-up efforts were launched to douse hotspots and prevent reignition. The fire, which straddled the Morrill County line, was fully contained and all units returned to station by 8:00 p.m. No injuries were reported.

The response also included assistance from the Banner County Sheriff’s Office for traffic control, support from local landowners and a morale boost courtesy of Domino’s in Scottsbluff which provided supper for the crews.

The fire comes as the National Weather Service issued a Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday across much of the Panhandle, including Banner County. Forecasters warn of gusty west winds exceeding 40 MPH, low humidity between 15-20% and dry conditions that could result in rapidly spreading fires.
