Sidney senior named National Merit semifinalist

Sidney High School senior Noel Onate has been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist, earning recognition as one of the top students in the nation.

SIDNEY — Sidney High School senior Noel Onate was named a semifinalist in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program, placing him among the nation’s top academically talented students.

Onate, a 4.0 student, is recognized not only for his academic success but also for his leadership, character and involvement in a wide range of school activities. He's active in National Honor Society, HOSA, and DECA and serves as a leader in band, show choir, speech, play production and music.

“We're very proud of Noel and excited for this opportunity,” Sidney High School Principal Ryan Plummer said. “He's an impressive student who demonstrates integrity, dedication and leadership in everything he does. This recognition is a testament to his hard work and the bright future ahead of him.”

As a semifinalist, Onate will continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships to be awarded in 2026.
