Four Sidney Wrestlers Headed for State
The Sidney Red Raider Wrestling team qualified four wrestlers Saturday at the B-4 District in Gering, for the Class B Nebraska Wrestling State Championships this coming week in Omaha.
The Sidney Red Raider Wrestling team qualified four wrestlers Saturday at the B-4 District in Gering, for the Class B Nebraska Wrestling State Championships this coming week in Omaha. Freshman Chance Houser (39-2) at 106, Junior Austin Munier (34-9) at 120, Senior Brady Robb (33-3) at 182, and Senior Hunter Ahrendt (22-13) at 195 all will compete beginning on Friday at the CHI Center in Omaha. Sidney, who qualified 8 wrestlers at Sub-District to wrestle in Saturday’s District Meet, finished sixth in the team standings. Although Sidney did not have an individual champion, Houser, Munier, and Ahrendt all finished in second place. Brady Robb finished in third place.
In the C-4 District at Valentine, the Bridgeport Bulldogs qualified 4 wrestlers for the State Championships. Senior Damien Bell (38-6) at 138 and Junior Steven Menke (22-3) at 160 wrestled their way to district championships. Senior Chance Cooper (25-3) finished second at 126, while Senior Trevor Widener (37-4) finished third at 152.
Garden County qualified 5 wrestlers for the State Championships out of the D-4 District at Sutherland on Saturday. Senior Colton Holthus (44-2) was a champion at 152 while Junior Dallas Miller (35-11) was a runner-up at 182. Other state qualifiers for the Eagles Freshman Gunner Roberson (25-24) at 160, Junior Trey Kirch (22-19) at 170, and Senior Chesney Stanczyk (31-9) at 195. Kimball will send a pair of wrestlers to Omaha in Sophomore James McGinnis (14-6) at 126 and Senior Connor Cluff (21-9) at 132.
Leyton’s Trenton Rushman (18-10) will be only the second Leyton Warrior to wrestle at the state tournament. The 106 lbs. freshman finished 3rd at Sutherland to earn his first trip to Omaha. Junior Brenton Abbott, who qualified last season at 126, could not earn a repeat trip this year at 138.
Classes A and D will wrestle on Wednesday and Thursday, with the championship matches televised Thursday evening on NET beginning at 6:00 p.m. MST.
Classes B and C will wrestle on Friday and Saturday, with the championship matches televised Saturday evening on NET beginning at 6:00 p.m. MST.
