OGALLALA - An investigation into what started a large fire at an abandoned warehouse at 201 South Spruce St. in Ogallala is underway.
The Ogallala Volunteer Fire Department said fire fighters remained on scene at the old Good-All Electric Factory late Sunday night, monitoring the structure until they could access hot and smoldering spots Monday.
The active blaze continued through midnight, but OVFD said it was contained within the building and there is no threat of other exposures.
"Portions of the structure have collapsed and the remaining structure is very unstable," the fire department said in a statement. "We ask that you view from afar until complete extinguishment and structural instabilities have been addressed."
It was the largest fire in Ogallala in five years.
Keith County Attorney Randy Fair asked people to stay away while fire fighters battled the fire. He says people need to stay out of the way of emergency medical services or face a fine for interfering or not obeying law enforcement.
Residents near Lake McConaughy, Sutherland and Hershey said they could see smoke from the fire in their locations.
The fire has affected other businesses in the area. Valentino's in Ogallala was closed Monday because of damage to phone and internet lines. Lake Mac Auto Body & Paint remained open Monday, but had interruptions with their phone and internet lines. They say customers can still drop-off vehicles, pick-up loaner vehicles and get estimates as usual.
An investigation into the blaze continues. There was no word on if anyone was inside or what was stored in the building.
