Sidney Wrestlers Open with Win at Gothenburg

The Sidney Red Raider wrestling team opened their season over the weekend with a dual win at Gothenburg on Friday and a sixth-place finish at the Cozad Invitational on Saturday.

The Sidney Red Raider wrestling team opened their season over the weekend with a dual win at Gothenburg on Friday and a sixth-place finish at the Cozad Invitational on Saturday.

Sidney used a pair of forfeits and a pair of pins from Ryan Rapp at 195 and Dietrich Lecher at 220 to jump out to a 24-4 lead at Gothenburg on Friday on the way to a 44-33 win over the Swedes to begin the 2021-22 wrestling season. Gothenburg closed the gap to 24-19 on a pair of pins and a decision. Chance Houser at 120 and Austin Munier at 126 added pins to stretch the Sidney lead to 36-19. Julian Maytorena capped off the Sidney scoring with a pin at 145 to secure the win.

On Saturday at the Cozad Invitational, the Red Raiders had seven wrestlers medal on the way to a sixth-place team finish. Austin Munier was a runner-up at 126 while Chance Houser finished third at 120. A pair of Sidney wrestlers finished fourth, Julian Maytorena at 145 and Dietrich Lecher at 195. Landon Hanes picked up a fifth-place medal at 285 while Quinn Arellano at 106 and Ryan Rapp at 182 ended up sixth.

Sidney’s is back on the mat this weekend at the Charlie Lake Duals and Charlie Lake Invitational at Cheyenne East High School in Cheyenne Wyoming.
