NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - All students attending Nebraska Public high schools, beginning with the Class of 2024, will now be required to take personal finance per Nebraska revised statutes.

On Monday, March 14, the North Platte Public School District approved the update outlined by the Nebraska Department of Education.

Personal finance has been elective at North Platte High for several years, but now it will be required. Current sophomore students will be required to take personal finance.

Students of any grade level may take the course.

In the upcoming school year, there are almost 200 requests for the personal finance course. In the following year, the district has already received close to 300 requests.

“We are going into next year to try to meet as many requests for the upcoming school year and then re-evaluate in December at the end of this current fiscal year,” said Vikki Carson, Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning.

In order to graduate, students must have a total of 245 credits, which breaks down into 150 required courses and 95 electives. The implementation of the new requirement will decrease the number of electives to 90 and increase the required course to 155. The number of total credits remains the same.
