NU Notes: Huskers Start Drake Relays and NWU Meet

The Nebraska track and field team began competition at the Drake Relays and the Prairie Wolf Invitational on Thursday. 

At the Drake Relays, Ryan Martins was the runner-up in the unseeded 5,000 meters with a time of 14:06.35, the No. 4 time in Nebraska outdoor history. Bailey Timmons placed 15th with an outdoor PR of 14:24.82. 

Taya Skelton placed 14th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 10:42.86, improving her No. 10 time in school history. 

At the Prairie Wolf Invitational, Passmore Mudundulu won the triple jump and finished second in the long jump. Mudundulu had big outdoor PRs in both events, 48-0 1/2 (14.64m) in the triple jump and 23-10 3/4 (7.28m) in the long jump. 

Tyler Drew won the 400-meter hurdles title in 53.67, while Clayton Keys (54.41) and Joseph Clifford (54.46) were third and fourth, respectively. 

Zach Morrison was third in the discus (153-00, 46.63m) and fourth in the hammer throw (184-0, 56.10m). Josh Marcy was fourth in the discus (150-9, 45.95m) and fifth in the hammer throw at 183-10 (56.03m), a PR. 

Nick Bryant led five Huskers in the top six of the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.74 to finish second. Daniel Mattern (1:53.00), Sam Easley (1:53.62), Holden Ruse (1:55.04) and Zach Van Brocklin (1:55.26) followed Bryant in order. Jack Nolley was third in the 1,500 meters (4:09.24). 

For the Husker women, Nieve Walsh won the 800 meters in 2:15.26, a new personal best. Kaitlynn Johnson (2:16.19) and Lindsey Blehm (2:18.41) were fourth and fifth. 

Karlie Moore won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.18, and Kerrigan Myers took runner-up honors in the 100-meter hurdles (14.09). 

Jade Hallgrimson (4:59.10) and Emma Ralston (5:02.39) were second and third, respectively, in the 1,500 meters. 

Gleason Recipient of Big Ten Sportsmanship Award

The Big Ten Conference announced its men's tennis individual honors on Thursday night following the conclusion of the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. Nebraska's William Gleason received the Sportsmanship Award for the Huskers.
 
Gleason, a native of Lincoln, Neb. earned the award presented to athletes that demonstrate sportsmanship and citizenship on and off the court. The senior has a 4-12 singles record and a 5-3 doubles record in the spring campaign. In singles play, Gleason has won four of his last five singles matches including wins over Wisconsin and Illinois.

Huskers Open Play at B1G Championships

The Nebraska men's golf team enters postseason play this weekend when it competes at the 2022 Big Ten Championships in French Lick, Ind., April 29-May 1.

The Huskers will be one of 14 teams taking on the par-72, 7,033-yard layout at The Pete Dye Course at the French Lick Resort.

Nebraska's five-player lineup will be led by senior Tom Westenberger, who has been a consistent performer for the Big Red throughout the 2021-22 season. At the Quail Valley Collegiate (Oct. 18), Westenberger notched his season-best finish with a tie for 10th after firing a career-best 54-hole score of 211 (-5) powered by a 69 (-3) in the opening round. The senior from Wuppertal, Germany, has added a pair of top-25 finishes during the spring season at the Desert Mountain Collegiate and the Stitch Intercollegiate.

Senior Caleb Badura is set to golf out of the No. 2 spot for the Huskers, coming off a strong showing at the Hawkeye Invitational (April 17) where he produced Nebraska's top team finish with a tie for 15th place and a season-best three-round score of 218 (+2). The Nebraska native shot an even-par 72 in the second round in Iowa City and closed with a 71 (-1).

Senior Branden Meyer (Gilbert, Ariz.) has made an appearance in every lineup this spring and will continue the streak at the conference meet. Meyer's season has been highlighted by shooting a career-best round with a 69 at the Seahawk Intercollegiate (March 28) and a pair of top-25 individual finishes at the Desert Mountain Collegiate and the Hawkeye Invitational.

Reed Malleck will compete in Nebraska's lineup for the first time of the spring season at the Big Ten Championships. During the fall, Malleck provided the top finish for the Huskers at the Rod Myers/Duke Inviational with a 223 (+7). At the Big Ten Match Play in early February, Malleck had a strong showing as the only Nebraska golfer to go 3-0-0. The sophomore from York, Neb., played as an individual at the Stitch Intercollegiate (April 8-9) and the Hawkeye Invitational (April 16-17).

Senior Mark Foelbaek (Jelling, Denmark) rounds out Nebraska's lineup in Indiana. He has also appeared in every lineup this spring, golfing his best three-round score at the Desert Mountain Collegiate with a 222 (+6) to tie for 20th.

Series Opener vs. Iowa Moved to 3:35 PM

Nebraska's series opener on Friday vs. Iowa has been moved to 3:35 p.m. due to forecasted inclement weather.

With the schedule change, Friday's game will no longer be broadcast on BTN and will be available on B1G+. Fan with tickets to Friday night's previously scheduled 7:02 game can still use them for the newly scheduled 3:35 start.

The Huskers and Hawkeyes continue the series on Saturday, with first pitch set for 2:02 p.m. The series finale on Sunday is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.

Saturday's game can be seen on Nebraska Public Media with John Bishop, Jeff Leise and Ana Bellinghausen on the call. Fans can also listen to Greg Sharpe and Ben McLaughlin call all the action of this weekend's games on the Huskers Radio Network. All three games this weekend will be carried on KLIN (1400 AM) in Lincoln and KXSP (590 AM) in Omaha. Scouting the Iowa Hawkeyes
• Iowa enters the weekend with a 24-13 overall record and 8-4 mark in Big Ten play after taking two of three games at league-leading Rutgers last weekend.
• Peyton Williams is hitting a team-best .374 at the plate with 15 doubles, two triples, nine home runs and 31 RBI. Keaton Anthony has slugged a team-high 17 doubles while hitting .353 with seven homers and 35 RBI. 
• Friday night starter Adam Mazur is 4-2 on the season in 10 starts with a 2.76 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 62 innings. Connor Schultz has posted a 2-0 record and 1.97 ERA in 10 appearances this season with 36 strikeouts in 32 innings. Ty Langenberg is 4-1 with 51 strikeouts in 39.1 innings and a 3.89 ERA in  nine appearances this season, including seven starts.
• As a team, Iowa is hitting .277 with 356 hits, 75 doubles, eight triples, 30 home runs and 234 runs through 37 games.
• The Hawkeye pitching staff has a team ERA of 3.49, while allowing 157 runs, 129 earned, and striking out 444 in 332.1 innings.
• Head coach Rick Heller is in his ninth season at Iowa, boasting a 264-169 record. Heller is in his 35th season overall as a head coach and holds a career record of 954-734-4.

Series History
• Nebraska holds a slim 22-21 advantage in the all-time series over Iowa.
• The Huskers and Hawkeyes met five times last season, playing two games in Minneapolis and a three-game series in Iowa City.
• The two teams split the two games in Minneapolis, while Nebraska posted two wins in the weekend series at Iowa last year. The Hawkeyes tallied a 3-0 win in the series opener, before the Huskers recorded wins of 10-8 and 13-8 to clinch the series on the road.

Huskers Grab Second-Straight Sweep to Advance

Iowa City, Iowa - The Nebraska women's tennis team started the Big Ten Tournament off strong with its eighth sweep of the season, as the Huskers defeated Purdue 4-0 to advance to Friday's quarterfinals at 12 p.m. CT. 

Competition began with doubles play. In the No. 1 spot, Kristina Novak and Maja Makoric took the match over Purdue, 6-1, for their team-leading 12th win. Clinching the doubles point for the Big Red was Chloe Kuckelman and Isabel Adrover Gallego on Court 2 as they won, 6-3. In the No. 3 spot, Ellie Kuckelman and Samantha Alicea's 3-3 battle against Milic and Larranaga resulted in an unfinished match. 
 
To start singles play, Novak played in the No. 1 spot and defeated Gallardo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Chloe followed suit in the No. 5 spot with a 7-5, 6-4 win. At the No. 3 spot, Makoric won by medical forfet to grab the second-round win for the Huskers. 

Adrover Gallego, Alicea and Ellie battled in the second set at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 spots before the match was called. 

Up next, the Huskers will face the No. 3 seed Northwestern in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 12 p.m. CT.

Huskers Set for Three-Game Series at Ohio State

The Nebraska softball team travels to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend, April 29-May 1, for a three game series with Ohio State. The Huskers will face the Buckeyes in game one on Friday, starting at 5 p.m. (CT). Game two is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT) while the final game of the series will be Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT). All three games will be streamed live on BTN+ (subscription required). Fans can follow the action live on the Huskers Radio Network and Huskers.com with the call from Nate Rohr. 
 
This weekend's series features two of the eight Big Ten teams with winning records in conference play. Ohio State (29-13, 9-8 Big Ten) enters the series in eighth place in the Big Ten standings, while Nebraska (34-11, 14-2 Big Ten) sits in second place. The Huskers lead the conference in numerous offensive categories including batting average, hits, home runs, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage and on-base percentage. Ohio State is in the top five in the Big Ten in triples (3), home runs (5) and slugging percentage (5). 
 
The Buckeyes are coming off of a midweek split with Penn State. OSU claimed game one, 4-2, before falling in game two, 2-4. Last weekend, Ohio State traveled to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on the No. 23 Wolverines. The Buckeyes took game one, but fell 1-2 in the series. OSU has claimed Big Ten series over Iowa, Michigan State and Indiana, but recorded series losses to Michigan and Northwestern. Ohio State is led by Sam Hackenbracht who holds a .400 batting average, tallying 45 hits, 40 RBIs and 13 home runs. Lexie Handley leads the Buckeyes in the circle with a 17-7 record and 2.52 ERA.
