Nebraska Head Coach Scott Frost met with members of the media following day eight of fall camp Friday. Frost spoke on Friday's practice and the progress during fall camp.

"We are eight days into practice seeing a lot of really good things out there," Frost said. "We still have a lot of work to do. What I really like is being around this team. This is a really great group of guys. I think the best leadership we have had. The best overall attitude we have had. Today kind of highlighted it for me.

We have a scrimmage tomorrow. The kids all know it. Sometimes the practice before that is not always the best. Did not have to coach effort or intensity or desire at all today. This is a hungry team and seeing a lot of really good things. It has been a fun few days. We have a schedule where we are trying to keep the kids as fresh as we can keep them. I think they have responded to that, so we just have to go upward and onward from here."

Frost spoke on the development of the offense.

"It is going well," he said. "(Mark) Whipple is in control. He is running it. I think it was important that the kids became familiar with the stuff that he wants to do. There are elements of it that we have done. I think we will add wrinkles and things that we have done but trying to get overly involved every day was probably not the right strategy. So, I will help and I think we will end up with a good blend but to this point it has been fun to watch his offense kind of evolve and bloom and the assistant coaches on offense have been doing a great job too. It has been fun to be able to sit back and have a little more mile-high view of it all."

He also commented on the team leadership.

"Our leaders right now are the tough working guys," Frost said. "And that is what you want. The guys that are working the hardest are our best players and they are our leaders so everybody needs to follow that. They are also the tough guys. They are setting the standard that everybody else has to follow. It is fun to see. When things are happening out there that are not up to those guys' standards, other people hear about it. And a lot of stuff is getting handled by the team that the coaches used to have to handle."

The Huskers will return to the practice field tomorrow for day nine of fall camp. Nebraska kicks off its season on Saturday, Aug. 27 against Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland at 10:30 a.m. (MDT) on News Channel Nebraska radio station across the state, including 98.7 FM in Sidney, newschannelnebraska.com and the free NCN app.

St. Clair Named Interim Head Coach

Associate Head Coach Justin St. Clair has been named the interim head track and field coach for the 2022-23 season, Nebraska Vice Chancellor, Director of Athletics Trev Alberts announced Friday.

St. Clair coached 10 NCAA qualifiers, including a pair of NCAA medalists in his debut season on the Husker coaching staff to earn his 10th USTFCCCA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year honor since 2016. The Nebraska throwers had a combined five first-team All-Americans and two second-team All-Americans, led by Maddie Harris finishing second in the javelin and Axelina Johansson placing third in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

"The opportunity to represent the University of Nebraska and continue building the legacy created by Coach Pepin is a tremendous honor," St. Clair said. "I am extremely thankful in Trev Alberts' belief in me to continue building the success of the Nebraska track and field program moving forward. I believe the University of Nebraska is a world-class university academically and athletically and I am excited to get going."

"Justin St. Clair has been a valued addition to our track and field coaching staff over the last year," Alberts said. "His recruiting and coaching abilities were fully evident as both his men's and women's throwers had a tremendous season. Justin has also shown he possesses the necessary leadership qualities to lead the Nebraska track and field program through this transition."

Under St. Clair's tutelage, the Huskers combined to set four school records and 13 top 10 marks in program history in throwing events last season. Nebraska had the top-ranked men's shot put and weight throw groups throughout the indoor season, while the men's shot put was ranked No. 1 for the final seven weeks of the outdoor season.

At the Big Ten Indoor and Outdoor Championships, St. Clair's throwers garnered five Big Ten titles and totaled 11 top-three finishes. Three Husker throwers earned postseason awards in 2022, with Alex Talley and Maxwell Otterdahl named the Big Ten Field Athlete of the Championships in the indoor and outdoor seasons, respectively. After finishing as the top freshman nationally in any of the NCAA field events, Johansson was crowned the Big Ten Women's Outdoor Freshman of the Year.

Representing Sweden at the World Athletics Championships in July, Johansson placed 12th in the women's shot put after becoming the only current collegiate student-athlete to reach the final 12.

Prior to Nebraska, St. Clair spent 10 years as arguably the nation's best throws coach while at North Dakota State. He was voted the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year with the Bison nine times since 2016 – five times indoors and four times outdoors. In 2019, St. Clair was voted the National Assistant Coach of the Year for men's indoor track and field, and he followed that up by being one of three national finalists for the women's award in 2020. He was promoted to associate director of the Bison track and field program in August of 2020, before joining the Huskers in May of 2021.

Huskers and Mavericks Play to 0-0 Draw in Exhibition

Omaha, Neb. –  In its first of two exhibition games, the Nebraska soccer team battled Omaha to a 0-0 draw at Caniglia Field in front of 1,252 fans.

Highlighting the scoreless first 45 minutes was a shot by Eleanor Dale saved by the Mavericks. Nebraska recorded three shots in the first half, but Omaha held the advantage with six of its own and four shots on goal.

The teams remained scoreless in the second half, but the Huskers had a few opportunities to find the back of the net. Sophomore Sarah Weber broke through the Omaha defense and took a shot that was saved by the Maverick goalie in the 46th minute. With less than five minutes to go, Dale headed a pass from Gwen Lane into the right post.

NU continues exhibition play next week when it returns home to face Tulsa on Friday, starting at 7:05 p.m. (CT). Nebraska's regular-season opener is set for Thursday, Aug. 18 against San Diego State.
