Eagles notes: Sioux Falls edges Chadron State

CHADRON, Neb. -- November, 19, 2022 -- The Sioux Falls Cougars scored on a tip-in inbounds play with barely more than a second remaining to edge the Chadron State Eagles 69-68 in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon in the Chicoine Center.
The outcome was a heart-breaker for the Eagles, who played their hearts out trying to topple Sioux Falls, which beat them 96-78 on the Cougars' home court last year. Chadron State may not have defended the winning shot well, but it was executed to perfection by the South Dakota team.
The Eagles had taken a 68-67 lead when center Porter Anderson grabbed a rebound and made the put-back with eight seconds remaining.
After a timeout, Sioux Falls missed an off-balance shot. The referees ruled that the ball was knocked out of bounds by the Eagles with 1.7 seconds remaining. After the refs spent several minutes looking at the video to make sure their call was right, the play unfolded.
Jake Kettner inbounded the ball by lobbing it over about a half dozen players in the paint to 6-foot-6 sophomore Noah Puetz. He was about eight feet away from the basket when he jumped, caught the ball and shot all in one motion. Puetz was just one of eight from the field when he sank the winning shot. The officials reviewed the video again after the shot. They determined 1.1 seconds were still on the clock, but it was not enough time for the Eagles to get off a viable shot
While Kettner was one-of-10 shooting, his pass to Puetz gave him six assists.
Two players—one on each side—had outstanding games.
Matt Cartwright, a 6-6 grad student, led Sioux Falls with 27 points on nine-of-18 shooting from the field, including six-of-nine on 3-pointers. He also made three-of-five free throws and grabbed eight rebounds.
The 6-7 Anderson paced the Eagles with 24 points while making eight of 10 field goal shots, nearly all of them power layups, and eight-of-11 free throws to go with six rebounds.
Anderson had a reason for wanting to play well. A year ago during the game in Sioux Falls, he was inadvertently hit, sustaining a broken nose and a concussion that forced him to miss the Eagles' next six games and wear a mask a few more times.
The Eagles got off to a slow start Saturday and trailed 23-9 midway in the first half. However, they got untracked and tallied 14 of the next 16 points, and were behind just 31-28 at halftime.
It was nip-and-tuck the rest of the game with nine more lead changes and four ties. A layup by Anderson with 11:52 to play put CSC ahead 50-44 for the biggest lead either team owned in the second half.
Besides Anderson, the Eagles had two more players score in double figures. Guard Isaiah Wyatt had 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, all off the defensive glass. Point guard Marcus Jefferson had 11 while going seven-of-eight at the free throw line.
Sioux Falls' only double-digit scorer besides Cartwright, who now has scored 85 points in four games, was point guard Jack Thompson with 11.
Sioux Falls is 3-1 and Chadron State 0-3. The Eagles will host Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Eight place at Younes Hospitality Open
KEARNEY, Neb. -- November 20, 2022 -- Eight Chadron State College men's wrestlers placed on Saturday at the Younes Hospitality Open in Kearney, hosted at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds.
Three men placed in the Elite brackets, where primarily varsity wrestlers and veterans compete, while five were in the Amateur brackets against freshmen and junior varsity competition.
Junior Quentrevion Campbell was the runner-up in the Elite 133-pound competition. His route to the finals included victories by decision over NAIA No. 12 Alex Pena of Wayland Baptist and Division II No. 1 Reece Barnhardt. His loss in the finals came to a two-time NCAA Division I qualifier from Nebraska.
In the Elite 125 bracket, sophomore Quade Smith started off with a sudden victory win over NAIA No. 12 Johnathon Ortegon. He lost his third match 6-0, but came back through consolations to defeat No. 9 Patrick Allis of Western Colorado in the third place match.
Junior Ethan Leake was the other placer in the Elite brackets, at 141 pounds. Going 5-1, every match he wrestled was a simple decision, including a sudden victory win over No. 7 Grayston DiBlasi of Colorado School of Mines. He finished off with a 9-5 win over a Kearney wrestler in the third place match.
In the Amateur brackets, redshirt freshman Keegan Gehlhausen led the younger cohort by getting to the 184-pound finals, where he lost 13-11.
Freshmen Hunter Gilmore, at 141, and Logan Berger, at 165, both placed third by getting to the semifinals, losing a close decision, and then advancing through consolations. In Berger's case, he came to the consolation semifinals having only wrestled four times, and his opponents had reached their match limits.
Freshman Hayden Burr was fifth in the 184-pound Amateurs, losing to Gehlhausen in the semifinal. Sophomore Darwin Hull fell to sixth in the same bracket after meeting his match limit in consolations.
The CSC wrestlers take the holiday week off of competition, before hosting a quad meet on December 4.

Cross country teams improve at regional meet
CHADRON, Neb. -- November 19, 2022 – The Chadron State College cross country teams finished 17th on the men's side, out of 25 teams, and 22nd out of 26 teams on the women's side, in a slight improvement from 2021 on Saturday in Denver.
In 2021, the men's side was 22nd, while CSC's women were 24th.
True freshman Topi Alahuhta was less than 30 seconds from cracking the top 10 seasonal performances all-time for CSC, at the 10-kilometer distance, clocking 33:29.1 in Denver to finish 69th.
The CSC women were led by true freshman Lexi Rule, who crossed the finish line in the six-kilometer final in 25:19.3.
Colorado School of Mines' Dillon Powell won the men's overall individual race, at 29:43.10. His team took the regional title by winning five of the top eight spots.
For the women, Adams State took top honors as a team. In a hotly contested race, the Grizzlies earned the top team score despite West Texas A&M taking the top two individual places at the regional.
Colorado School of Mines, Colorado Christian, and Western Colorado are the top three finishers, in order, in the men's races, to get auto-qualification for the NCAA Championships.
The Adams State women won the regional title. Colorado School of Mines and University of Colorado Colorado Springs rounded out the top three to finish auto-qualification.
The Eagles have concluded their season in Denver, with the regional challenge.

CSC women pick up wins in dual meets
MINOT, N.D. – November 19, 2022 – The Chadron State College women's wrestling team won its two duals on Saturday, to run its record to 3-1 on the season.
The results were both close. CSC won 25-23 over the second-ranked Canadian collegiate team in Saskatchewan, before closing out a dual with NAIA No. 14 Jamestown, by the margin of 26-22.
Three weight classes went to the Eagles by default. CSC got forfeit wins at 101, 109, and 116.
Kayley Garcia won by tech fall, 14-4, at 143 pounds.
At 155, Marissa Porch pinned her opponent to run the Eagles out to a nine-point lead, with two matches remaining.
Kamila Montenegro, at 170 pounds, made sure that despite her 5-2 loss by decision, the Huskies would not rebound to get the team win.
The dual against Jamestown did not disappoint. The Eagles won the first three matches, then got a point in the fourth, to go up 14-5 nearly halfway through.
The Jimmies took the next four, leading at one point by 17-16, but forfeits by Jamestown at 155 and 170 pounds put the match out of reach for the Eagles.
