LAMAR, Neb. - A structure fire at a fertilizer plan in southwest Nebraska has been ruled an accident by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal's office.

Chief Investigator Adam Matzner says the cause of the fire has not been determined and there were no injuries in the blaze.

Authorities investigated the fire involving chemicals 23 miles west of Imperial on Wednesday afternoon.

The Chase County Sheriff's office says the fire happened at Nutrien Ag Solutions (formerly Lamar Fertilizer) at the intersection of Highway 6 and 314 Ave. at 1 p.m. MST. They told people to stay away from the area, and advised people stay out of the heavy smoke plume and shelter in place.

Some area residents elected to evacuate the area all together. Smoldering smoke could still be seen coming from the building late Thursday.

Highway 6 was closed from west of Imperial to Holyoke, Colo until 8 a.m. Thursday.

Lamar, Imperial, Grant, Venango, and Ogallala Fire Departments responded to the scene.
